Cheetah, a chimpanzee who was one of the most famous animal stars of the 1930s and appeared with Johnny Weissmuller in such Depression-era adventure films as “Tarzan the Ape Man” and “Tarzan and His Mate,” has died, The Tampa Tribune reported. Debbie Cobb, the outreach director at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, Fla., where Cheetah lived, told The Tribune that Cheetah was about 80 years old and died of kidney failure on Saturday.

I used to love those old Tarzan movies, with Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan. They were non-stop action adventure films, and often Cheetah was the smart one in the family. Good stuff.

Yup, Saturday Matinee for me was often Tarzan and Cheetah - no one portrayed Tarzan better than Weissmuller.

Yo, Cheap- They were on TV on Sunday afternoons when I was a kid. Good stuff, I loved 'em. Whenever I think of Tarzan, I see Weismuller in my mind. Oddly enough, I now live about 20 minutes from Wakulla Springs, where a lot of the outdoor footage was filmed. The tour boats go by the old curved palm tree he used to dive off of. The palm isn't doing to well either, I suspect it won't last many more years.

I also highly recommend the original novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I've read about a dozen or so of them. Hard to find, although Amazon has them for the Kindle. They might be better than the Weismuller movies... Maybe...
