Argon is exactly what they use.

First, don't get the torch near the glass. Unless you preheat the whole pane, the local heat will expand that spot, and the rest of the pane around it will not grow, this will crack, or possibly shatter the glass.

I've never done this, but maybe you could rust the bits off the surface faster than letting them slowly turn orange. if you used an oxidizer like hydrogen peroxide I would expect it would accelerate the inevitable and the black bits will dissolve. Or a mild acid like muriatic could etch the steel enough to cause it to release from the glass. You will still have the pits, but pits without black (or later, orange) spots would probably be less noticeable.

Thanks duratec7. The acid suggestion sounds good. My wife is going out of town for a week tomorrow so I'll give it a try while she's gone. We could live with pits in the glass....I could claim that it came from the manufacturer that way. I could claim that I bought a second to save money...that's always gets a positive response in this area.

Will report on how this works.

Thanks for the warning about the localized torch....I had been planning to try that tomorrow night.
