I don't have any that I can look at and it's been a while since I've messed with it, but how would it weld up?

By black pipe I mean the stuff you run gas lines with. 3/8" - 1/2" - 3/4".

It is not car related at all.

In my head I remember it as being something that would weld with no problems at all.

Pretty sure you can weld it up no problem. Has to be cleaned really well, I've heard the quality of pipe varies significantly, etc. etc.

Cool, I'm going to be rich, rich, rich I tell you!!!!!

I've just spent a LOT of time (& money) putting together a dancing flame, glass crystal fireplace.

The burners were insanely expensive for what they are and so was the glass. I surprised my wife with one for Christmas and she's ecstatic, but I had so many unnecessary issues getting it to fit and work properly.

One of the cool things about these fireplaces is the things you can do with different color and texture crystals so that even when it's not being used as a fireplace it's pretty. Being a creative guy I'll end up with a large outline of Texas filled with the Texas flag for a while and later, or maybe along with a pond and stream with grass & rocks.

You can even add topography with hills & valleys.

If I can easily weld the pipe I can make my own burners to fit whatever I'd drawing in the glass. I could add a "bonfire" off to one side separate of the other flames for instance. So I could make flames match the artwork.

Right now I've just got carribbean blue crystals piled up on top of some big diamond shaped crystals to get it working, but tomorrow I'll work on some art. My son already wants a big NInja with flames coming out of his sword which should be childs play.

I'll post a pic once I have something worth looking at, and since I'm playing I'll probably change it a lot to get some practice in.

Now I've got to research types of crystals that would work the best and how to buy them wholesale.

I think a white on white design with the design being done in mirror pieces so that when the flames are on the design suddenly appears and actually glows.

Unless you can get that approved through your insurer they are going to drop you like a hot potato. That is highly unlikely so unless this is for your backyard, well ummmm.

Black pipe is nice to weld tig or mig.

Just clean it really well and get the oil off. I have heard never use acetone so I use denatured alcohol then sand the weld area clean.

MIG, Er70 with C25 gas has always given me good results.

TIG, (built a fancy spud launcher) i used alumina-bronze but i was going for a look above practicality.

Flux also no problem.

Back in my jalopy days, EVERYBODY used black pipe for roll cages. In the rough and tumble world of "Figure 8" racing, cages definitely got a workout! They were 'Hell for strong', just not very light. A good ol' buzz box was all you needed. A stick welder was all they used in the oil fields, too.

The insurance company doesn't care if you live in Texas. Unless the burner is CSA ANSI or ULC approved they would deny you coverage in the event of a fire. Sometimes even if the apparatus wasn't the culprit.
They absolutely hate wood stoves, don't see this as being that much more loved. Of course pictures would help, because, you know, we love pictures?

Black pipe welds fine. My brother built this out of mostly 1" and 1.5" stuff and used a stick welder.

The roll bar and braces on my car are made from 1" black pipe and welded with my little mig welder.

I've never heard of this and the burners I've found for sale don't have any type of approval on them. Just cheap Chinese stuff with no thought to how it is to be used which was the problem. I had to use adapters and flex hoses when if it had been designed properly it would have been a simple bolt in instead of 6 trips to the hardware store.

Very cool!

It's the coolest Ford Ranger I've ever seen. At least that's what it was supposed to be. He started out wanting to put full size axles under a Ranger and it kind of snowballed from there. It weighs about 3000lbs, has about 400hp, 16" or 18" King coilovers, and 35" tires. I think the only ranger parts left are the steering column, brake pedal, and brake master cylinder.

Reminds me of the antique store that was selling Abraham Lincoln's axe. It had gotten 16 new handles and 4 new heads since he used it, but it was the same axe...
