After going to Oshkosh and watching this superstol aircraft, I was amazed at the performance . We went to the factory to check it out. Would love to have it but can't start another project till I finish one of existing projects.
This guy makes it look easy. Finish your take off on water if you run out of room.

Bud Granley is one of the all time greats. Saw him at a few airshows in the 90's.
Flying can be more reasonable than most people expect. Hangars are expensive, but there are places, usually away from the major metropolitan areas, where they are still quite affordable. Airplanes are actually quite cheap; I still see 150's well below $ 20,000 and Pitts S-1s, below $35,000. Dollar for dollar, a Pitts S-1 is the most fun of anything that flies. Now it requires a bit of piloting skill, but that can be learned. When I used to compete, I flew 2 practices a day, on the way to work and back, 10 min each and burned maybe 3 gallons of fuel each time. After 10 minutes of pulling and pushing 6 G's, the world is in order and you get on with your day. I was lucky that my airport had an aerobatic box right over the field, so after the engine was warmed up, it was straight into the box, do your stuff and land. The controllers liked to watch, so they were usually very accommodating. And two Pitts' can fit into one hanger, so the cost was shared. At one point, we had 5 or 6 on the field.
Insurance is like for a Locost. I only carried the required liability, and self insured for the hull. No different than a race car. Come to think of it, a season of local FF racing was more expensive than a season of Aerobatics.

I've seen Bud Granley fly many, many times. Nice fella - met him & chatted a couple of times, too. I recall one airshow we went to - several of the featured pilots failed to show (even though their aircraft were present & accounted for). Bud stepped in, and flew every single one of 'em for the show - I figure he flew probably 4 straight hours, in at least 6 or 7 planes!!

A BD5? I love BD5's!!! Particularly the BD5J. I saw one of them once in the museum at Santa Monica. I thick it might have been the plane, or one of the planes, that was used in the James Bond movie, if I remember correctly. What a rush it would be to fly one of them.

Unless of course you already live in a small house, drive used cars, and don't have cable TV... then some things just aren't meant to be.

One of the highlights of my life was when a mechanic came out to work on a P38 I was looking at. Hearing that thing start up and go to full speed - with him using a 24"-long screwdriver to adjust mixture and me 20 feet away - was really something.

You are probably right. I may have gotten lucky not getting an engine.

The FAA guy that came out to certify that the VP1 was going to be allowed to fly, (watch me be a test pilot and do what he asked me to do while he stood on the ground waiting to see if I survived its first stall etc.),
Said he had flown A BD5 at Newton. He said it flew like a clipped wing P51 whatever that meant. He said it was a very stable airplane but the control stick was very quick.
I got to know Burt Rutan there at the last before he left the company....he was upset that he did most of the design work and Jim took all the credit. Jim was a bit of a rogue. 5 or 6 years ago he still had A large black body guard that traveled around Wichita with him according to one of the guys at "THE YARD"

After watching all the planes to build at Oshkosh, I am dying to build a "just aircraft superstol " but got to finish a couple already started projects to make room. This thing is amazing. We watched the owner touch down and immediately turn off the runway. Here is a vid of a guy that makes it look easy.
