Supposed to get into the new "house" next week.
OK, so it's a place to sleep and shower, but not even a shade tree to store cars under.
It's a double wide so I will be joining the "White red-neck trailer trash" club  but I want to be "High Class" trailer trash :!: with the requisite "Cars on blocks" out of sight. :D

Looks like a real shop starts at around $25K without wiring, insulation, plumbing. :BH:
So, looking into "Portable" garages.
No building permit needed and $1,500-$3,000 for something too small to work in but good for storage until I find a more permanent answer.
Thought I might have found one at CostCo until I noticed the warranty is only ONE year!

Anyone have a more durable brand they can recommend?
If I'm spending thousands of $$$ I expect it to last a reasonable length of time, not just one year. :ack:

Summer sun is brutal, rain is heavy at times, snow is generally pretty light except when it is not.
Seems the material and manner of sealing seams are the most important.
Cannot go with metal at this time due to cost, maybe in about five years.

I have two of the Costco ones, both about 8-10 years old. The one that's in full sun is breaking down, but the one in the shade is still in great shape. It's about 12'X20', and about 10' high (with curtain-style doors), so plenty big enough to work on a car in.

I ran a length of outdoor, rubber-armored cable (can't remember what the stuff is called) to it, installed overhead fluorescent lights & a pair of 110V outlets to it. Certainly a cheap way to have a garage for a few years!

Have a look at what your zoning will allow for sheds. Often you don't need permits for up to a certain size. Some prefabbed sheds are surprisingly reasonably priced if there is a local company making them. You can also buy blueprints/BOM and put a large "shed" together pretty quick/cheap if you can do basic framing.

Limit for permanent structure is only 120'.
That is basically a 10' x 12' shed.
Or 15' x 8' to be barely long enough to cover a car end to end but unable to work on it. :BH:

Yeah. If space allows I would be inclined to build the largest shed I could and then, when able to upgrade, move the shed and convert it into a workshop or storage space for the main garage. You don't need nearly as large of a garage if you can put big parts coming off in the shed temporarily. Or have your workbench/tools in the shed next to the garage. Can be as close as you want usually, just not connected.

Good luck.

Build 2 legal size sheds side by side. After “sealing” the joint you could have a 12’x20’ area to work in.

I drive past this place frequently. They make these structures locally - they look to be good quality.

I moved my garage stuff into one after a tree fell on the garage. Condensation would form on the inside of the tent and rain on my stuff. All my tools had a haze of rust on them. Not happy making.

As of today it all officially mine.
There is a useful size shed on the property already for storing "Stuff" but it is too small for cars.
Ground is bare sandy dirt and probably gets a bit soft in winter.
Thinking I may look into getting a small slab poured ASAP and put one of the moderate price tents over it for now.
I have a few months before it becomes a big issue.
I have almost 1.5 acres of 2.2 acres total, dirt that I can put live-stock, a garden, or a shop building on.
But because it is "Rural Residential" I cannot put any sort if crop on it.
Need to make some $$$ off the empty space, I may have a heck of a garden next year.
Anyone have a good suggestion for high $$$ yield, fairly low water use, low-ish labor "garden" that is NOT dope?
I can do a green-house so long as it does not require a foundation.

That crop, my friend, is the proverbial "Unicorn." Ever heard the saying, "Crime doesn't pay, and neither does farming"? It's true...

Reminds me of a joke.
Q-What would you do if you won the million dollar lottery?
A-I would farm til the money runs out.

I remember being told many years ago that "Capers" were a good bet.
Some sort of spice I think.
Need to look that up.
No doubt any such Garden will have to be a specialty item or two.

I understand that hops are getting hard to find, and very expensive. Don't know how hard they are to grow, though...

Best legal crop for a small commercial operation is Haskap Berries, also called Honeyberries. They are one of the newest super foods with an unlimited demand for product.

You can get 870 plants in a half acre. Each plant will produce 8 to 12 lbs of fruit per year. Fruit wholesales at $10 per pound so revenue for a half acre of plants is between $69,600 and $104,400 per year.

If you buy 1 year old plants for your land they will be about $3.50 each. Most of them will begin producing some fruit in Year 2 (the first year after planting a 1 year old) and will be producing full quantity by Year 3 or 4. The are easy to maintain and to harvest. They grow well in USDA Hardiness Zones 2 to 6.

I'm receiving my first plants in 3 weeks.

Richard appears to be in Nevada: those Haskap bushes will probably fry, unless he is at altitude. :-)

We have a few Haskap bushes along with our high-bush blueberries. They are just starting to produce this year after a couple of years growth.
