North American production rights held by MTD. .. exclusive contract for up to 70 kw iirc and open contract for over 70 kw. I could be off on the numbers, it changed a while ago from a total exclusive to open over a certain size.
Yep, it's the one used in a Craftsman riding lawn mower.

Interesting but, probably only gives a speed variation of about 3:1. Fine for a lawn mower. Not so good for a car.

I think belt and cone type CVTs should oughta work better, on account of you can achieve a square inch or so of contact grip... as opposed to about a quarter inch square or less (1/16 sq in)
