Looking into a electric revers for my Lotus15R1 build. Have a Subaru starter with a 8 tooth gear, and have room for a 6" OD. driven gear. Is a 5.25 to 1 at the diff enough?

I used a Honda Odyssey 1996 starter motor and flexy plate. The flexy plate was mounted on to where the crown wheel goes(Chain driven diff)
This worked out to be a perfect reversing speed.

If you use the speed controller off of an old golf cart or powered pallet jack you can have variable speed reverse. ..

If it is on the pinion and the diff is about 4:1, maybe.
5.25:1 is about 1/3 of what is typical for an auto starter tooth to flywheel tooth ratio.

The starter is probably gear reduction and permanent magnet, so those things are in your favor.

The greater reduction will provide more torque and slow down the car at the same time, which is a good thing.

I'm using a geo metro flywheel and gear reduction starter (automatic version) on a 2.66:1 final drive. I'm mostly concerned about how quickly it will be trying to move backward.

Golf cart speed control is typically a heavy duty resistor in series for each speed.

I suggest a guarded toggle switch to enable a momentary button to engage the starter, to prevent accidental application while driving.

I have thought about this one.

Although intended for a fixed differential, I think it would work for a live axle, if it is mounted to the fixed drive shaft, between the engine and support bearing. However, I don't know if they would have a gear to fit a North American sized shaft.

I'm trying something a bit different. I'm using an ATV winch geared to a urethane skate board wheel which will cam up against the driveshaft. Should go about 3 mph.

Pics required! It's always interesting to see what new ideas people are trying.

Here are a couple of pictures of my reversing contraption. The urethane roller has a hard plastic center which has 3 or 4 flutes. I machined a piece to mate this to the shaft. There are 6 ball bearings in the assembly. The winch motor probably has bushings. There will be a toggle link to lift the urethane roller into contact with the drive shaft. I'll pull on the center of the toggle with a cable or rod which will be connected to a De-Sta-Co clamp.
