I take it that means it's too solid a car for a BEC swap.

Tentative deal struck pending it being as good as the pictures indicate.

Anne didn't think I was serious when I asked if she would mind if I bought another car.

Technically you aren't buy another car - you're only buy half of a car since you can fit two Minis in the space of one normal vehicle. ;)

So really you still have 50% of a car to go until you buy another car.

At least this is how I justify having the Sprite, Locost, STI, and formula car shoved into a 2 car garage - there are really only 2.5 cars in there!

Nice
Hey, you got a spare A series motor lying about? Starting the search for something bigger than the 850
a 1098 or 1275 is a bolt in swap

I don't really have anything extra at the moment aside from the 948 that melted a rod bearing.

I'm still shooting to get a spare engine together before the PVGP in July. If I have a spare I won't need it but if I don't I feel like I'm guaranteeing myself engine issues during the first weekend.

I would really love to own an original Mini but I think if I did I think would be frustrated with all the old rusty parts. Building a car from scratch is much cleaner and you can make it look however you want.

Thanks anyway. I was oversimplifying the "bolt in" part.

I go up on Saturday to get the car. I've already been running though a mental to do list

Here's what I think so far. Item will be added or deleted pending inspection on dis-assembly.

First, assess how good or bad the drivetrain is.
drain and flush gas tank, check for leaks as they are prone to rust out
check brakes, order replacement bits
perform the long sitting engine startup procedure. See how well it runs, how much it smokes, yada yada yada
Take it for a few laps around the neighborhood.
*** Decision point*** If the engine is pure crap, start planning the GS1100 or a Honda car engine swap

Gut the interior
pull the engine and trans
pressure wash everything inside and out and let dry for a couple of days
assess body repairs needed. I know it at least needs 3 small patch panels

Bodywork and Paint
Fender flares

upgrade electrical to small modern alternator, 6 fuse box setup, halogen lights, stereo and amp

upgrade the suspension. I haven't decided between new rubber cones or springs and shocks.
12 or 13 inch rims

maybe a 6 point roll bar to tie everything together
upgrade the seats. Thinking about some modern seats on custom bases up front, recover stock in the back.
carpet
door cards
headliner

Right now the budget for parts is $3000. Should keep me paying attention to costs yet yield a really nice resto-modded finished product.

target is pretty darn close to this

After surfing the interwebs a good bit over the past couple of days I have come to the conclusion that most folks on the classic mini forums, or the mini swap forums are a bunch of pussies...

At least compared to the Locost crowd around here. those guys go buy a prebuilt cradle for $3000 and pat themselves on the back for dropping a motor into it and marrying old Mini Cv's with new Honda. oooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh magic

This crowd here will attack an IDEA with a pile of rusty steel, a stack of greasy parts, and a Horrible Freight welder and BUILD A CAR.

Just when ya think there's not much rust, ya remove some rust and then some more and more........ The interweb is full of masacistic Brits who restore classic minis.

I just bought one for $100 knowing what I had and what I was going to do and kept on finding more and more and.............
But, it's a passion and its amazing what what one can do with the good parts and new parts can be bought
Preservation not restoration.......... So, gitty up

Huffster, That's a nice looking build. Looks like you've got a full on Brits resto shop there.
