Sometimes I need a bracket with a precise adjustment and a sliding bolt arrangement is not positive enough. I like to use the attached Vernier adjuster. The disadvantage is the number of holes required and the subsequent overall length.

The valve spring compresser I borrowed from a friend is set up like that, so you get the lever, and over center action, precisely right.
