Post subject:  Trouble finding 6063 aluminum tubing
I'm trying to order some 6063 tubing and I can't really find what I need. I need it to be 1.75"od and anywhere from .090" to .120" wall.

I have to make some 90 degree bends and I have the correct die to do this. But I was advised not to use 6061 as it will not work out very well. But 6063 will bend nicely.

Anyone here have a source for this material with good pricing?

McMaster-Carr carries 6063 tubing, but they'll be pricier than a local place is likely to be. Maybe also consider 3003? Just make sure it doesn't have a hard temper (or anneal prior to bending).

Checked McMaster. They do not carry 1.75" od

Intake manifold runners. 6.5" CLR

I have the bender and the die. But I can't find the tube...

I'd get 6061-T6, anneal it if needed (draw on it with a blue Sharpie and heat it until the blue disappears), and carry on bending it. Order a little extra - try the first bend without annealing and see how it goes. Plus you're at 3.7:1 for the ratio. That will help your cause.

Why are you going so thick for intake runners? 0.063" should be more than sufficient and cheaper.

Have you tried this before?

I have a JD2 Model 3 bender. They reccomend a tolerance of wall thickness and OD for each die. I just stick to what they recommend to stay clear of issues.

Have you looked at rigid aluminum conduit? It won't be exactly 1.75", but 1.25" conduit will be 1.66", might be close enough to work. It would be cheap enough at an electrical wholesaler to give it a try anyway. I don't know what alloy it is, but we bend it at work all the time.

They do, but just outside your max wall thickness range (or well under at 0.065"):

Also available in other alloys. I had trouble finding it at first, too, but I'm not sure why. It's listed in both structural tubing and tubing for fluid flow.

Not in the diameter you're talking about but I've done 6061-T6 1"x0.065" before with no problems. Annealing is the key. Your bend ratio is also more modest than typical (3.7:1) - this will also help.

Any chance of visiting a local metal place and seeing if they sell cut-offs? There is a place here that does that with the leftovers from their fab shop and you can get a foot of tubing or a section of sheet dirt cheap. Its nice for experimenting. I'll probably be stopping by on Saturday. I have a 1.5" diameter 6" CLR die for my bender. If they have a scrap piece of 1.5"x0.065" tubing I'll grab a piece and try it.

How many degrees do you need to bend?

I'm going to order this and see how it goes. It's 6063 Aluminum. Wall thickness does not meet the recommended thickness, but it's worth a shot...
