I was working on the paneling on the locost when my mother stopped by. I was telling her about how they made a tool for laying out rivets called a rivet fan. She tells me that she has one of those and she would be back in five minutes. well i did not believe her but she shows back up with a Buttonhole spacer. Well not technically a rivet fan it works just as well for what I am working on and it was free.

Probably cheaper even if you have to buy One.
And THAT is what this site is about...

It looks like one side is graduated for how big your husband's belly is getting.

That's neat.

Another option is to layout the spacing you want on a narrow strip of cardboard from a cereal box, punch through the marks on the box, then mark the sheet metal through the holes.

Along the same lines as the card board template. If you make the temple from a heavy gauge steel, you can use it as a guide for the actual drilling. [The drill will not walk off center] The advantage is that you can attach the template with a couple clecos from the first set of holes and just keep moving the template forward without any additional layouts or center punching. The other advantage is you that it will give you a consistance edge spacing. I have a fan but used the template 95% of the time. There a picture of the template in the riveting 101 section. Dave W

I have a 16" steel rule with a couple of different spacing drilled into it. One on the English side at 2", the other on the metric side at 60mm

HA...
Sorry to bring back a topic from the dead...
But just to give back a little to tis forum...
What I used was a cheap elastic band marked at regular intervals.
I then would Drill and cleco the corners of the panel to be drilled for riveting...
Then I would lay the elastic band on the panel to be drilled, and stretched so a marking would coincide (sp?) with the clecos.. If I wanted longer spaces, I would stretch the band a little moreI had the band marked at different intervals with different colors and that gave me a range of spacings to match different locations.
Hope this helps new builders that have not yet reached this stage.
