had a hella time with rivetnut/nutserts/captive nuts this weekend. Couldnt get any of the to stop spinning. Got to were i broke out the tig to tack the heads down. I'm going to look for the tool to do the sixty 1/4-20 ones I plan on using to attach my side panels.

Try using the next size smaller drill bit, then use a hand tapered reamer to open up the hole so there is a slight force needed to insert the riv-nut into the hole. Another option is riv-nuts that have seriations around the O.D. of the barrel and the under side of the head.
In both cases you need an accurate hole to grip the main body of the riv-nut.

For non-loaded applications, like mounting fenders and such, aluminum rivnuts seem to be easier to collapse and flow into the parent material, making a tighter grip. I was not concerned about any galvanic action, which may turn some builders off. Hence the "non-loaded" caveat.

^^That's what I've done to attach my rear fenders. Aluminum rivnuts, 1/4"-20, half a dozen per fender. I may even up the number per side before I paint the frame.

While the aluminum rivnuts may not be as strong as, say, stainless or mild steel, they're certainly stronger than the fiberglass fenders they're holding on....

A drop of Super Glue while pushing them in might help.

If you get any in the threads, acetone (fingernail polish remover) is a solvent for cyanoacrylate.

Every Rivnut has a specified drill size. Are you suggesting using smaller than the recommended size? The recommended size is a pretty tight fit.

I would not recommend smaller then spec dia. for the riv-nut. Probably what is happening is that hand drilling the sheet metal is leaving a less then round hole . You need a really good fit to prevent any problems!! Production tolerance used for riv-nuts is a total of .002" on the dia., and they would be typical punched Vs drilled. DaveW

Anyone have a recommendation for a half decent air rivet gun? Seems to be a lot of the $50 Jegs/ebay/HF and the $500 McMaster/Spruce and not much in between.

Aren't those like $400-$500 before shipping? I live in Canada, the exchange rate is not great right now.

In good shape yes. Ones in need of work come up for less, there's a company in New York that will rebuild them for around $125usd.

Aircraft Spruce & Specialty has a "3/16 inch heavy duty rivet gun" for $273.95 USD! Check it out. Well, they'll have it come July 23!

I clicked on the link and got 218.95.

To be honest, I have no complaints with my HF 3/16" pneumatic. It can be had for $40 all day long -20% (coupon)

It worked great on the Locost build.
