I honestly don't expect much difference in handling between the two. I've always preferred longitudinal because they're generally easier to work on - having the components spread out a bit. Also, transverse requires one to use shorter control arms, with less margin for error on your geometry.

Horizonjob: Phongshader and I have two projects in the fire. The first out of the oven will be the SP1000. We've got the first body out of the molds, and Phongshader's currently modeling the chassis. I hope to begin construction work on that within a month. We've got day jobs, so nothing moves fast, but it's coming......

The other project is the long-awaited 442 body. It's in scale models right now and looks pretty damn bitching if I say so myself.

We're kind of shy about blowing our horns till the projects progress further, but our expectations are high.

Sounds like a job for the VW/Audi 2ltr four pot or the very compact 2.5V6 engine and transaxle combo. No mixing or matching needed, just thoughts.

I was looking at that too, namely the passat drivetrain. With a narrow enough powerplant and a wide enough passenger compartment it could protrude into the tunnel without so much added wheelbase for a narrower rear qtr.

Egoman's chysler 3.5l v6 longitudinal drivetrain would be nice if you don't mind an automatic.

My understanding is that the VR6 motor is about 32 inches long, which disqualifies it for our application. If we're going I4 it's gonna be a Duratec, because that's what we're experienced with, and... oh yeah, there's a new crate motor in our garage.

The Audi transaxle is very promising however, as it's quite compact, and they're inexpensive and abundant.
