Pretty or not, there's no excuse today for not having head support. I get it that it's about his fabrication skills, but why not extend the seatback a bit higher? I wonder if he also recommends no seatbelts to complete the correct period look?

I think you are jumping to conclusions, Maybe head support is mounted on the cage or Roll hoops.
By the way.. You should see the condition on my copy of your book..
I get to read it EVERY DAY...

That is a much simpler design and process than his first version, which I think was for Hot Rod Magazine. Although, I think a few vertical beads and a limited set of dimples would yield a simpler, stronger seat yet.

The head rest issue that Kurt brings up is a serious one. Covell's seat could be fixed by doing the usual (for 70's era seats) by putting a head cushion on one or two "poles" attached to the seat back.

I'm facing the same situation. I know what I want, but it's a sub-project to design and build it. For me, I think it will be a Phase II project. Covell's seat isn't a bad alternative to consider for my Phase I seat, which is just something to get me going and the car on the road.

I'm glad you posted your examples. Just what you have, a few beads and some dimples/flares will stiffen things up very well. I've build some things out of beaded 20 gauge and feel it's quite strong. I have some 22 gauge too, but have found it too thin, especially for amateur welding. It's easy to burn through.

I'll try to find the video you mentioned. Your seats won't be too hard to fit with headrests, I'd think.

Yes you are right, that's ideal, Not vital though ;for most butts a flat bench is OK. To curve this end of the seat makes meeting with the back (two curves) more delicate.
