I used Miata seats. I had to remove the rake adjusters as they made the seats just a tad too wide (my frame is a +2), and I made aluminum plates to replace them. Seats are extremely comfy, still adjust fore-and-aft, fit nicely into the car, and cost me $150 CDN for the pair. I also built in a tilt arrangement that allows me to unlock the rear of the seats and tilt them forward, to give access to the seatbelt mounts, etc. 8) 8) 8)

[quote="Bonjo2"]The Kirkey is pretty amazing for the money. The 16" fits perfect in the passenger compartment but would need some motivation to get in the passenger compartment with the RX-7 offset rear. The 15" fits very well though--lucky guess on my part.

On my CMC build I'm also using the Kirkey drag seats. I'm not so sure if the stock seat cover padding is going to be enough (considering that they were designed to be used 1/4 mile at a time).

The previous owner had narrowed the passenger seat by vertically cutting the seat into three places, overlapping the parts and riveting them back together. The cuts are on either side of the bottom extending up the back of the seat where the sides meet the flat part of the seat. I slightly widened the seat as much as I could to fit into the chassis and had it all welded up. The seat is aprox 13-1/2" wide and I can barely fit into it. The seat is bolted to the floor and the back bulkhead. I'm not using an adjuster on the passengers side since the seat would jamb on the frame rails if moved forward.

From the looks most photos have the kirkey sitting upright. I test fit and found the vest fit/comfort with the same lay back as the caterham seat. Feet to pedals = perfect. But will need to bring the steering further out of the scuttle. I figure I'll have plenty of room for the paddel shifter.

I'm using an adjuster on the drivers side from a Nisson P/U truck. The adjuster has a very low profile and is easily modified to fit. I also tilted the seat back with 3/4" spacers on the front mounting bolts between the seat and the adjuster.

I really like your green color.

Yes the seats are rather tall but the top half of the seat is a softer foam thant the bottom so I sink in about half way. The side rail tubes on my chassis are angled down as well. When sitting in it the top of my thigh to knee is parrellel to the top of the rail.

The kirkey pro street drag looks nice. However, i like an upright seat, and it appears they only offer it in a 18deg layback. Also, it has gone up in price...jegs now has them at $122 and $80 for the cover.

I instead went for the upright economy (19 series). Jegs has them listed at $160 and $60 to $92 for the cover. But they will match the Kirkey website listed prices of $100 and $46 for the cover. So, two seats, w/ covers for around $300...pretty good deal. I got the black nylon covers, which i hope will be more durable than the cloth stuff.

Cheers, -Scot :)

Found these at speedway. A little expensive, but I like the vintage racer look.

Cobra makes a set called the "Roadster 7"

Might work really well. No idea the price.

The corbeau makes a A4 that is 18" wide. I think that it too wide for a book chassis but ok for my 442.... or so i hope  And you can get them in MANY colors, Red yellow, Blue, Black, Black/Grey, and Black Leather. Leather is a costly option.

They are about $500 per set.

I just got the 15" kirkey pro street drag seats and they are quite comfy. I am pretty small and fit with a slight bit of wiggle room, but no more than that.

The maximum width of the seat (including the snaps on the snap on cover) is 16" (which is towards the front of the seat). THe rest of the seat is around 15.5" or less.

The frame rails where the seat are are 17" apart and the seat has some room side to side. I think if the inside of the outer rail was left unskinned (which is what most people seem to do anyways), a kirkey 16" wide seat should fit, but the side bolsters might need to be bent in a smidge (totally doable).

Hope this helps!

Also, the seat is an 18 degree layback and is quite comfy, although not hard-mounted yet.

Just make sure it's high enough to protect your head and neck. The "bargain" low-back seats are (to me) a death-trap. Imagine getting rear-ended and either bashing the bare roll-hoop with your head, or missing it and having your head bend back more than 90 degrees - no thanks.

I'm using high-back Ultrashield seats in my next build... Oh, and don't forget to test the seat while wearing a helmet. If you don't, bolting mounting it any old way, the seat may push your head forward due to not having designed in space for the helmet.

I bought two Kirkey economy drag seats and covers from Jegs.com. Cost $340 shipped which isn't too Locost, but cheaper than many other options. I was looking through the catalog they sent me and saw these seats. They really adhere to the Locost philosophy at $35 each. They come in different colors (for another $5) and have padded covers available.

They actually have the version 2 out now, with separate holes for the shoulder harnesses for only $5 more. This would be a great option besides the fact that they are too wide (20")

Found an even better looking one at summit for only $36.95 but again, too wide. :(

The Gibbs book has plans for a fold-your-own seat shell. If you start with the roof panel from the donor, add trashbag and expanding foam cushioning, and throw in a roll of duct tape for upholstery, you have the ultimate locost seat.

Is this what I did? Hell no. I caught a Kirkey seat, with upholstry, for $100 in a Speedway sale. The seat (and header) was my first purchase, then I built a frame to fit.
