I am planning to buy a Trail Tech Vapor (Vapor Kit: 75-601) http://www.trailtech.net/product8157.html#8157 and a Indicator Dash (022-PDA) http://www.trailtech.net/022-PDA.html
Does anyone have an install of this sort working? comments? any other items I need to order from them. It is going on a MegaSquirted 4AGE-20V

As the Corporal on "Hogan's Heros" use to say, "I know nussingg!" But I think Rod put one of those in his 5.0 Locost. Seems like he had trouble with the tach signal. You might check his build log.

Installed one a few years ago on my sons SV650 while he was in Afganistan. Really quite simple, just follow the instructions. The tach pickup was a few wraps around a sparkplug cable and worked flawlessly. If it doesn't read reliably, try a couple more wraps.

As I remember - it did act up after a few years and had to have a new watch battery to make it happy.

I'm using one on my diesel reverse trike.

I compared all the sensors available, then looked at which sensor was used for each kit and the price, then chose a kit that had the sensor I needed, since none of the kits actually applied to my diesel.

Do you ever find yourself wishing you used more of the tach?? With a diesel, you probably never top 4k, correct?

I love the price (what a good VDO Speedo will cost), but I wonder about using less than 1/2 the tach forever! Did you mod it??

Cheers!

I have the same motor as Jack but without the turbo, so I expect to MAX out at 3600 rpm or so.

I didn't modify the instrument. The vapor also has a digital tach display as well as the bar, so I figure I won't be paying much attention to it.

It arrived...
It is so small that a steering wheel mounted setup has some level of appeal, I think I will try to resist though. Temp sensor was an exact replacement for the one in the Toyota engine. Lots of stuff to do before I get this mounted up for real...check back in a couple of months.

Mounted up the Trail-Tech Vapor. Wiring could not be easier. Tach works fine...even though I can only look at it during cranking. I still need to add the speedo magnet and sensor. I really like the little bezel they have for it that can hold indicator lights. I have my high beam, blinker indicator, charge light and oil pressure light installed. I will install oil pressure and air-fuel ratio gauges on the flat part of the dash just to the right and below the Trail-Tech.
So far a satisfied customer.
...now why wont this engine run for more than one second?

Where/how did you mount the speedo sensor?

It is not mounted yet, but it is going on the front driveshaft u-joint. I need to make bracket that mounts to the tail of the transmission. I will post a picture after I make it. Right now, I am concentrating on getting the darn motor to run reliably on MegaSquirt (then I can drive it. I really want to do an autocross this year and I am running out of time. Its a runner as soon as the engine cooperates.) ...and finishing up the last of the wiring and making it look nice. It's a rats nest now. How does such a simple car have so many wires?

Considered the Trail Tech set up but was concerned with not being able to see the LEDs in bright sun or with Polarized sun glasses. I have had this problem with other instruments mainly my wife's Prius.

But then again my eyes are old.

Got the speedo sensor working. Tach is still a little flaky, but will be good once I finish screwing around with the wire wraps on the spark plug wire. The hood for this doesnt sound like a bad idea, but I dont have enough experience with the unit to know if the hood is needed yet. Speedo sensor is mounted off the tail of the trans and the magnet is on the ujoint.
