Looks good
I have been playing with it on some scraps before doing mine. I have a lot of curves and holes in mine both in the middle and the edges. How did you manage the edges? and what sized did you use for the dowel. I have been looking at a bigger pattern 2" sanding disks with about 1 1/8" overlap as its on a 46 inch wide piece.

I don't know about protection. The etching isn't deep at all. You can sandpaper it off.
Dale, I used a 3/4" dowel. Once I cut the leather off at an edge. Most of the edges had a bit of roll off as though it was punched out. I used less pressure and longer dwell at the edges. It doesn't take much pressure.
I would think sanding disks would wear out quickly. I read where one guy used scotch brite on a large disk lapping it up over the shank and used a hose clamp to hold in on. You might try that; easy to change as it wears.
