Anyone have any good suggestions/links for a decent scuttle mount rear view mirror? I'm starting the process of making my seven road legal.

Thanks

Why not mount it to the windshield? Glass shops have the bracket that glues to the windshield. Pick up a mirror from the wrecking yard.

One problem with a scuttle mount, it that your (read my) shoulders are higher than the mirror/scuttle. This blocks a significant field of view. X2 if you have a passenger of about the same (ahem) size as the driver..f you mount it high on the windshield, it becomes much "more betterer" (a highly technical term)

I seem to recall that some older Brit cars ran steel rod from the scuttle to the top of the windhield. The mirror mounted on that rod and was adjustable to any height.

I had a scuttle/dash mounted one on my old car, all i saw out of it was the spare tire. I would highly recommend a windscreen mounted one.

I don't seem to remember any Brits with that set-up, but the old Porsche 356 Speedster had it for sure. All the English sports cars that I can recall had the scuttle mount

I have a scuttle mount mirror on my Locost. It's from an MGA. Around $15 at Moss Motors.

Chuck, the mirror on the rod was on the MGB. Obviously they learned their lesson from the MGA.

Yep, early MGB for one; and early Jaguar XKE for another. Nick, how is your field of view? I never had issues with my MGA mirror. But in the MGA, the scuttle that the mirror was mounted to was higher. You sat more in the car rather than on the car. I guess on a Locost, it might depend on seating arrangement and whether one is building a book build or a 442ish car.

I have a book frame and the top of the scuttle is 3" higher than the top bar in back. The mirror sticks up another couple of inches. There's a roll bar but no headrests, and the mirror seems to work fine, although I haven't had it out on the road yet.

I got mine from Victoria British I don't recall the exact price without looking it up, but was very cheap 10 or 15 dollars.
It is a Austin Healy replica.
I personally have not had any problem with it being in the way of my rear vision mounted on the scuttle.
I have had a few people assume if it blocks my vision until they actually sat in the car.
My take on it was the wind shield is quite small in profile, so why install anything on it to block ones vision.
I will admit though this is fully subjective, right down to the size of the person driving.
Go to the wreckers and pick up a cheap mirror for a couple of bucks and tape it to the scuttle and the windhshield and then make your own decision.
What works for one does not necessarily work for another.
