I think this is brilliant. I was up in the Portland neighborhood yesterday test-fitting an Exocet windshield to a friend's car (he's a race kinda guy and doesn't need/want one, but he let me use his car for jigging) and I told him I could (but would rather not) go up a size on the windshield brace tubes so passengers could have a grab bar, and he said "Bad idea," as he doesn't want passengers' hands anywhere near the outside world when he's autocrossing/hooning with them on board.

So did he have a better idea? Indeed he did. He had a grab strap (seat belt webbing with leather to the inside) sewn to the anti-submareening strap between the passenger's legs, big enough for both hands. He says "Stick your hands in there and hold on and don't let go," and then he can fling his car with enthusiasm. I think it's brilliant.

Nice! My passengers generally don't know what to do with their hands, either.

I've threatened to install a second steering wheel.

While I apologize to Jack or this minor detour, I make no apologies for where my mind goes. I have no control over it.

I've had lots of passengers ask where to put their hands and what to hold onto in my car. One fairly petite girl was holding onto the shoulder straps of the harness, but she was small enough that she had a lot of room in the seat. Her ribs were pretty banged up after just one autocross run. I felt pretty bad, it looked like it hurt. I wonder if a strap like that would be enough to brace yourself with if the seat is too big.

When Yamaha got sued for injuries to passengers in the Side by Side Rhinos, they came up with a solution sort of like that. They mounted a rigid verticle handle with a rubber grip next to the tunnel. It also has a loop strap so that the left hand (farthest from damage in a rollover) holds onto the bar and the right hand goes through the strap.

In my buggy I have a set of NHRA sanctioned arm restraints that fasten to the seat belt should straps that work very well at restricting arm movements, so much so that it is harder to reach the shifter. But they won't allow my buggy on the dragstrip without them.

Love Chucks post. With my car being right hand drive I have often thought about having the passenger hold a extra steering wheel and all of a sudden hold it up in the air as we go down the road. But I have a sick sense of humor. Russ

The Subaru Brat pickups had something like that on the seats back in the bed. A pistol grip on each side of each seat.

I've noticed some of the hillclimb cars often have something similar. (madram11 videos on youtube) They'll charge at a vertical embankment, make it a few dozen feet up, and do a beautiful triple axel before rolling and bouncing back to the bottom of the hill, where they end up upside-down as often as not. The passengers seldom seem put out by the experience...

My Dad had a friend that did that back in the day. He drove an MG-TC!
