Could be neat to make a sort of modular system, so you could mount a spare or extra luggage. Although if I was going far enough to want extra luggage, I'd probably want a spare tire as well.

Imho, a must-have is a plug kit with a mini air compressor, even if you carry a spare and jack. If it will roll to expose the puncture, a jack isn't needed either but it does make the process easier. Most spares are not checked regularly for pressure and plugging is quicker/easier. I've never had a plug fail.

I once encountered a road where nails had been dumped. Many cars changing tires and they get one shot to keep going. I had to plug a tire three times with three different punctures to go a mile, and each time was quicker than jacking and changing a tire.

A removable case above the fuel tank could be made to fit, lock, and look like part of the car.

That's an interesting approach that's nicely done.

I was always thinking of my own build as one I'd like to go places in, as in take touring. Storage space is definitely an issue. There are some other options too like: saddle bags on the spare tire; rack atop a hard boot cover; towing small trailer, etc., etc.

Of course, if you're going solo, the passenger side footwell and seat become options too.

FWIW, if you are planning on making something like this for your Locost, be sure to consider a movable license plate and lamp as it must be visible with the trunk in place. Just something to think about in your design.

Some may remember that I built a luggage rack for my Locost. Not as pretty as the one shown but a bit more versatile, even if I do say myself.

I would 2nd Chucks luggage rack. Its differently more versatile. A removable license plate and lamp might be required. But I see a lot of car racks stacked with camping gear and coolers, here in Michigan and there no way is it possible to see the license plate. You should probably check with your state about the plate. My rack has a movable plate mount but no lite. But I very rarely drive the Seven at nite. You are seated so low that both on coming and head lites behind you are right in your eyes.

The original was invented by Ralf Angetter from www.gd-collection.de and he owns a trademark/copyright on it. Feel free to copy and build one for your own use but please dont sell or trade.

I modified Ralfs original a bit and used hard-soldered steel instead of Aluminum. The rack is very variable, one or two cases can be transported. I have several cases: One with spareparts, one with campinggear or an other one with two person camping kittchen, depending where I go and what I go for.
The cases can be simply taken off just to take them with you into the hotel or tent.

Due to German law there is an additional number plate on the box, fixed with Velcro fastener for safe hold and easy taking off. The original plate remains fixed on the car underneath the case.
