Hey gang
My Centaur kit came with clam shell fenders and I love the classic look. Problem is when I put the FAT tires all around (17 x 9's with 245/40/17's) the fronts stick out about 2 inches on each side.

That has me looking into switching to cycle fenders.

Where can I find some 11 inch wide cycle fenders that don't break the bank?

Not too bad
They quoted $50 each plus shipping for a 10" wide, 25" diameter, 120 degree arc steel flat top fender with radius on both sides.

I'm also waiting for some info on a Big Dog 11" wide radius top. The descriptions on Big Dog fenders aren't complete enough to know the radius or coverage arc.

Guess not too many math geeks ride Big Dogs. :P

Yeah, $50 each is pretty good. I don't see where you can do better for new fenders,,if they fit.

I've been looking for some for a simple 15" VW wheel with a small tire. I thought I might make them out of Divinycell foam sandwiched between two layers of epoxyglass. One still needs a mold to do this, and the latest idea i had was a bigger tire cut in half, with the plastic pressed inside it. Other alternatives for a mold are bigger readymade fenders , but the size and contour needs to be right. Plus one has to buy it to use it.

One problem is I can't find any proper tire size numbers on the web, like thickness of wall, and so have to go out and measure the real thing!

Go to the site MYTF posted. You "design" your fender with A. B, and C dimensions. I followed up with a quick call to verify my math

Those look good.

I ended up getting a killer deal on a pair of Big Dog Cycles ridgeback blanks after a couple of phone calls.

The ones headed my way are 14 gage steel, 11 inches wide, radius top and radius both sides. 120 degree coverage. I made a STUPID LOW offer; they accepted. 8)

Thank you for the reference too busy and MYTF,

I put in a quote request myself. Problem is, I have a skirt to be attached so it is more complicated. They won't do it, naturally (special shape) so I have to add it. I may buy their fender if it is the right size, and form a skirt to fit. We'll see.

I too started with clam shells. Wanting the 1962 Seven America look. Alas my tires were only half covered by them. But before I went to Fndersnmore another Locoster, Bob McCleod in Toronto made a pair of Caterham CSR replicas for me. Again alas! To get them to fit my tires I have to mount them way higher than I would like. I want some fender below the mid point of the tire to try to cut down the stones winding up in my face.

The CSR replicas are up for sale if anybody would be interested.

And once you've found your fenders, what's the best product to secure them to thè brackets ?

I've lost one already at speed ...

I've been using four 1/4" bolts with drilled and tapped holes in the bracket for a couple years. What did you use that didn't work. That is useful to others too.

Chuck,

I noticed that your fender hangers appear to have i/2 of a tube welded to a flat piece. If that's the case how did you split the tube?

Looks strong!

Larry, that is exactly how they are made. I used the same 1"od x .083 wall tubing as my control arms. I drew a line along the tube and went at it by eye with my cutoff blade. The "stay" is 1/8" thick stock formed in a single continuous bend. So far they have lasted over 3000 miles of mostly highway driving .

Well it turns out the guy I talked to at the bike shop doesn't know how to measure fenders after all.

He got the width and the radius right, but missed the arc length by at least 20 degrees, probably closer to 30 degrees. These were supposed to be 120 degree arcs somewhere between 90 and 100 is closer to reality.

Still, they're gonna look good on TETANUS. I can't decide whether to return them for the right ones or make do.
