I have AS1 laminated glass for my Seven, but it looks like it is going to have to AS1 and maybe some other DOT mumbo jumbo etched in it for inspection. Has anyone done this? My glass place says that they dont have the stencils for sandblasting the info into the glass. Is there a source for this stencil?
thanks,
Paul

You could use stick on letters and numbers, then mask off the area, blasting only the margin.

I'm not sure what California's inspection procedure is.

Maryland Inspection Procedures:
(1) Proper Marking. Inspect glazing material for proper markings. The following is a brief list of “AS” markings and applications. Safety glazing material marked:
(a) AS-1 is used in the windshield and may be used anywhere in a motor vehicle.
(b) AS-2 may be used anywhere in a motor vehicle except for the windshield.
(c) AS-3 may be used in windows to the rear of the driver in trucks, truck tractors, buses and multipurpose passenger vehicles. The vehicle must be equipped with an outside rearview mirror on each side.
(d) AS-4 or AS-6 may be used in the rear windows of convertible passenger car tops.
(e) AS-10 may be used where bullet resistance is required anywhere in a motor vehicle including the windshield.
(f) AS-14 may be used anywhere in a motor vehicle except that it may not be used in the windshields of any of the following vehicles: convertibles, vehicles that have no roof or vehicles whose roofs are completely removable.

Call around your local glaziers--there are stencils and acid that do the job without sandblasting. Of course, you may have to sweet talk them because they're guaranteeing your glass is indeed AS-1, and if they didn't sell it to you I don't know how easy it is to inspect.

You can get glass etching cream at your local craft store (Michaels might be in your neighborhood) and it will do the job if you can make a stencil.

Does it work on wrinkles too?

I asked a local glazier if he has windshield glass 3/16 inch thick. He said it isn't available any more; he would use the standard, slightly under 1/4 inch.

I am throwing this out there to see if somebody knows where I can get thin laminated glass.

Does VA require AS-1? The reason I ask is because I believe it has to be 1/4" thick to be AS-1.

Andrew,
Safelite on Frankstown Rd. did my windshield and I ask about the marking. They said it was not necessary in PA for registration. Is yours marked?
Just checked PA Vehicle Code 175.67. Does not say "AS-1", but infers that windshields after 1934 must meet something. We plan to be in Beaver to see you May 5th, by the way
Don

My first windshield did not say AS-1 and the clueless "enhanced" inspector took exception to it. Even with paperwork proving it was AS-1 and no vehicle code saying it was required he refused to pass it. I ended up getting another piece of glass to make him happy. He was still kind enough to drain my battery and returned the car with a completely dead battery...I guess he did not appreciate me questioning his decision.

I guess it comes down to whether you make sure your guys knows the rules or make the mistake I did and just assume he does.

Sounds good. I'll see you guys on the 5th. Hopefully the weather cooperates.

So I ended up etching AS-1 into it with the etching cream. I used a commercial stencil. It came out fine.
