I'm thinking about adding a traditional 7-type stripe to my car, in vinyl. Anyone done this? 3M Scotchcal in Sunflower looks like the right color, pretty close to the photoshopped picture below.

I like it . I think that vinyl is the way to go. If you ever change your mind and want to remove it, or change the color, it can always be done at -0- expense. I did a similar thing when I rebuilt my MGA. A business friend cut me a roll of the shipping wrap (3M) used on new cars going to the dealer. I had parallel racing stripes for about a year when the novelty wore off. In 5 minutes, it was gone with no harm done to the paint.

I'd say "Go for it!"

You could paint the stripe on using Eastwood's removable Elasti-wrap product. It's neat stuff.

it looks ok ?
the thing is it's just so over done .
as a artist the same old same old does not thrill me .
personally when I see the same old strips on a car I kind of over look them .
when you see a set of cragar wheels on a 70's Camaro do you say to your self wow that's a new idea or wow another set of cragars on a Camaro .
there are so many other strips and tasteful graphics to do that would still have a nice classic flare to them .
as for vinyl I'm not a fan of it I'm paint so I would opt for paint more colors to pick from it would also bring the cars graphics up a notch .
I know why most people go with vinyl so I totally understand that .

the strip really makes the bump on the hood stand out when you walk around the car you will see this big yellow bump right in the center of the hood .
if your looking to accentuate the hump on the hood then go over the top of it . if not run the strip down the side of it .

what I'm saying is it's not good but it's not bad either .
it's just another yellow strip on a green 7 .

You're right, green sevens with yellow stripes are a dime a dozen. But Chuck's right, too. Vinyl is erasable. I ordered the vinyl and I'll post pictures when it's done.

Really looking forward to your progress report, Nick.
I'm especially curious on how well you can shape it around the inside lip of the nose. After John (wheezer) mentioned the idea of doing the whole car in film, I've been doing some reading on it. I may just go that route; I'd like to avoid painting, and thought about polished aluminum, but now, that 3M series 1080 looks darn interesting.
I have used the old style 3M vinyl for graphics and letters on the airplane, but I wouldn't want to use that, because no matter how hard you tried, it always trapped some bubbles.

I like it! I've got to learn to photshop- you even have shadows in your image :) When you're done, could you post up how you applied/cut the stripe? I'm interested in maybe eventually doing this, but I've not researched how to cut the stripe to size without harming the paint.. Obviously it can't be that tough..

Love the idea that it's 100% reversible too..

Hey ccrunner,
here is a link to one of the wrap distributors. If you scroll down, there are a couple of videos, one about the knifeless tape.
http://www.3dwraps.ca/
What I haven't figured out yet, is how it will stick to raw aluminum and un-painted fibreglass; I'll have to ask the distributor.

Hey Nick - The traditional strip looks cool! You did a good job with Photoshop, I hope the real thing turns out as well.

To all those who think the style is too common, how many of these cars do you really see on the road? I think we get a little out of touch with reality when we spend too much time in forums like this. There is nothing common about a seven type car on the road. Keep in mind also that the Locost you are building (most of them anyway) have a "common" design and you decided to build one anyway - 'CAUSE THEY'RE COOL!.

John

It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you are doing it for yourself.

Thanks for the link Martin! Very clever method with the knifeless tape.. Also interesting to note on this thread just how very many vinyl colors/textures/options there are!

I have a vinyl plotter and do graphics for my nephews car club and friends. If you are going to do the stripe around the nose like that then use the knife-less tape as suggested. Also, you will need to use a high quality vinyl wrap film. That is the only product that will conform around all of those compound curves and stay put. It can be heated and stretched with a heat gun. The quality wrap film is fairly expensive but not as costly as paint and has air channels on the sticky side so all air bubbles can be worked out. 3M makes a quality wrap in just about any shade and texture you could ask for. It will stick well to any smooth surface such as raw aluminum and fiberglass. Oracle also makes some high quality wraps.

a couple of different stripes on my daily. I change them frequently. Much easier than paint when you can't make up your mind.

I added a single stripe. I didn't want to mess with trying to cover the nose in vinyl. It doesn't look as good as I thought it would, but the car does stand out now, where before it kind of blended in.
