So i wanted to remake my dash cover using the old carbon part to get it exactly the same but i ran into an issue. After lightly sanding the carbon i sprayed it with the usually feather fill and sanded again. I then noticed little pin holes in the part that the spray did not cover. So I have a few questions.

1) can i just fill these with bondo/spot putty and recoat?
2) can i use something out of a can to recoat? I don't have easy access to a gun ; (

You can build the most awesome thing in the world but at some point, an 80yr old man in a crx is probably going kick your butt on the track... don't ask me how I know.

put on a heavier layer of feather fill maybe?

That looks like the weave wasn't totally filled with resin

i did 4 heavy coats.

Yeah those are the pin holes in the part that were air voids. i didn't notice at the time since it is on the backside of the part.

I'd hit it with glazing putty, sand, prime...

is there a spray can polyester primer that can go over the Feather fill since I don't have access to a sprayer?

there is at my local auto paint shop. About $12 per can for single stage or $20 per can for a 2k can in a can

You are making a mold of the CF part? If so, just wax it (green wax), PVA the part, gel coat and make a mold. The pinholes will be "up bumps" in the mold and EASILY sanded out. Sand and polish the mold. DONE!!

Definitely not a body-guy here, but I've used some high-build primers from cans before with impressive results. Maybe give it a couple coats of that and see where you end up. Kartracer makes a good point too.....

Cheers.

I bought a gun so that i don't have to rely on others to spray things. I plan on trying to fill them with bondo or spot putty then respraying the whole thing.

I came here expecting the green gross stuff, this was a pleasant surprise.

I have limited experience with glass - but had a similar issue trying to mold some parts a little while ago. My fiberglass fiend friend taught me to use a little bit more hardener than called for and to stay with it till it kicks.

Are you letting them cure overnight - through a potential temperature change?

Drywall spackle actually works as a good light-weight body filler on CF parts. Much lighter than Bondo

This is covered at length in the old Rutan manuals. Imagine having to do an entire airplane like this.

I'm sorry though, I read it 30 years ago and don't remember the answer.

Spot putty worked really well.
