Post subject:  Riveting floor panel

Hi All,

I got Stainless Steal Rivets 1/8" diameter with a .095 aluminum floor. Is there a recommended rivet spacing I should follow?

1 inch to 1 1/2 should be fine. Probably overkill, but then, that's what we do. :shock:

Is it good to split both sides or join them together? I plan to make the top part of the transmission tunnel accessible.

Split it. I kept mine together and heat build up is much higher than when I removed it

I split mine, too. Access to the driveshaft's U-joints, brake & fuel lines, electrics, etc. is infinitely easier when it's open at the bottom, as well as being able to take off the tunnel top. I'm all about access, because Murphy's Law categorically states that the instant I permanently enclose something, I will immediately need to get in there again.

That.. is a LOT of Clecos! :shock: Though I suppose that many would come in handy for aircraft work...

That's good spacing, in aircraft talk that should satisfy the Vne (Velocity to Never Exceed). Google that........

At the risk of sounding PC, a more "sustainable" approach is to only Cleco every other hole and/or once the panel is Cleco'd into position rotate a few extras to the area being riveted. On the other hand, use 'em if you've got 'em :D

I Bought 50 Clecos.
I found that enough to rivet a 120 rivet panel OK While sikaflexed...

I reckon more would have caused timing issues unless I had someone with me...

LOL you can never have enough Cleco's, BUT you'll wonder how you ever fitted panels without them.
IMHO 50 Cleco's would be enough for 150 holes, that's plenty.

Just a comment: With almost everyone splitting the floor pan in 2 pcs, I'm surprised I have not seen people weld a continuous flange along the inside of the tubes. Then drop multiple aluminum pcs for the floor in from above, resting on those flanges. This should eliminate 1) the worry about how many rivets are needed to keep the floor from falling off. Alternatively just use polyurethane adhesive; 2) the worry about water intrusion to the tubes from the rivets; and 3) the need for using expensive Cherry rivets for strength. The MGA uses flanges like that using a wood floor screwed in a few places to the flanges. So does the MGB but they use a steel floor pan spot welded to the flange.

That just ain't right...

Other than that, the only real objections I can come up with is that would be a whole lot of welding along the edge of the flange, and that the only thing preventing road debris from pushing the floor up into your legs would be the adhesive bond. Given the claims for some modern adhesives it might not be anything to worry about, though.
