Another one for FAQ?
The S3 is well know for having the DOHC, but they also came with a crossflow SOHC 1300 and 1600 with a single down draft weber. To cover the round, chrome air cleaner, they used a bolt-on scoop with compound curves. These cars raced at the Wilhire 24 hour races in 1983 and 1984 in the under 2.0L class and did well, except for damage to fuel tanks from being struck in the rear by saloons.
Construction method would be similar to my scooter mods:
viewtopic.php?t=3993&start=0After the scoop top shell is removed from the mold, cleaned, sanded dull on the inside, and trimmed to fit the hood, the shell is tapped to the hood and holes are drilled in the hood for 4, long, #10 screws, with a nut on the top of the hood and the bottom to hold it in place. Bondo-glass is mixed and spread around each screw to bond it to the shell. The bondo-glass is also used to thicken the edge around the scoop opening. Microspheres, (tiny glass beads) can be added to the bondo if your concerned about the weight of a total amount of approximately 1/2 cup of bondo-glass.
Another, lighter option is to lay glass inside the taped on shell to create a flange for mounting.
