Maybe. I don't know what it's vibration or abrasion resistance is.
What if you wrap it tightly with fiberglass mat (no resin) before putting it into the steel exhaust tubing?
As far as that goes, if you wrap it with large diameter heat shrink tubing, would the tubing melt or survive?

Heat shrink burns at a pretty low temp. I'm not sure what the point is beyond a side pipe that doesn't burn your leg if it eventually blows out and is hard enough that there isn't much if any sound attentuation.

Mcmaster sells similar stuff. It would cost a lot to do a set of side pipes.

UPDATE
I don’t know why anyone would want to build a muffler when they are so cheap to buy, but
I like the clean look of a straight pipe so that was the first reason to give it a try.
The reason I built it was I wanted to see if it was possible to build a muffler that would fit inside a 4” tube that would accomplish the task of quieting down a 7 liter engine.
I also wanted to try some ceramic materials that are not commonly used in a stock muffler to check out their sound deadening properties and longevity. I tried to find a 1 or two piece tube of 4" extruded material that could be modified but had no luck.

So far the thing is working fine and after over a thousand miles the sound is still mellow and around 90 DB at 50 ft / 6000 rpm.
It is not quiet but we can actually talk to each other at 60 mph.
The one thing that did not happen with this setup was insulation of heat coming off the muffler. The entire pipe gets very hot.

If someone tries this again, I wonder if you could save on material and make a simpler version but cutting lengthwise strips instead. You could make a ring from the strips or try some different shapes and multiple chambers inside the 4" pipe length…

Here is a sound / video test that will give you an idea of the sound these mufflers make up to 120. Sorry about the camera placement......need to move it down and forward. Its a Gopro HD

An update. As expected after 4000 very rough miles this thing is getting really loud. It was great while it lasted but this material is too soft and can not stand the violence of the exhaust pulses. I took the muffler apart yesterday and the ceramic material is totally gone. I ordered stainless wool in a coarse and medium grade to give these a test. I will tightly pack the area between the 3" center Perf tube and the 4" out side tube and give that a try. The coarse grade will last longer . The medium will vaporize much more quickly so I have probably wasted money on the medium grade. I need a strong Pyrex ceramic wool to pack into this thing. Pyrex wool by its self doesn't last long either but withstands the pulse violence better. It is destroyed mostly by the temps.

Maybe parts from these folks would be helpful, different packings, various Stainless steel perferoated or louvered tubes, cones and parts of mufflers...

Gale, this is a little off the muffler topic, but how is your reverse mount alternator working out? Any suggestions and/or pictures you could share? Maybe this is worthy of a separate thread. Thanks!

Thanks I will check it out.

Tom
The Vett alt. is working perfectly so far, running in reverse up to 7200 rpm ....with no change in pulley size and with out reversing the fan. I don't know of any of the Storker guys who have had a problem doing this yet Tom. Will let you know if it it blows.
Don't try it with a one wire Chev. Alt., .......6200 rpm will Fry the regulator...destroyed 4 in the Cobra. Finally increased the pully size.
