Co-Signed by the guy with a 2" diameter 1' long wastegate dump to atmosphere, and a full 4" pipe from the turbo to the rear bumper. I used to get phone calls from a friend that lived a mile away telling me to knock it off as he was trying to sleep - he actually never missed. :lol:

Knocking down the dB's also lets you drive further without exhausting yourself, and get through traffic without feeling guilty / nervous about the trooper on the side of the road with his window down.

Great advice I think I will go with two of the Harley ones to keep the noise down on my S2000 motor when it is finally running.

My old muffler got too loud, so I started looking around. The smallest high flow muffler I could find was the Dynmax Super Trap. It is available with 2" inlet and outlet and is only 3 1/2" thick, even though the web site says otherwise.

It quieter than the 2" "installer" turbo muffler it replaced. I have a 2" glass pack in front of it and the combination is as quiet as a stock setup, at least at low throttle. The downside: It is available only in steel and is butt ugly, like any other cheap muffler.

FYI, This turned out to be very quiet. A good rumble at idle but "street car quiet" on the track. This set up will be for sale soon and I am changing my engine.

The old Corvair had an offset muffler. The offset is from one corner at one end to the center at the other end.

Walker Quiet Flow 3 replacement for 84-86 mustang, pn 22348
4.25 x 8.813 Oval, offset, 2.25 in , 2.25 out, 13 inch case, 16 inch overall.
Also has a handy bracket built in but you can cut it off.

Too quiet? Use the Walker Sound FX instead of quiet flow 3. It is going to be louder than the mustang anyway since there will be no tail pipe. I only use Walkers. They cost a bit more but they are made better than most.

I agree with MiataV8 as far as using the Walkers, I am using a Walker Quiet flow #21028 originally for the 1962 chevy truck.
It is quiet enough for the wife and I to carry on a conversation yet sounds very muscular when the the throttle is put down.
I have been quite happy with it. It doesn't have a fancy chrome or polished finish, but on the other hand you could put a polished heat screen around it.
In my case I didn't bother and have yet have any negative comment on my muffler, it looks period and like it belongs.
Plus it works well.
I ordered mine locally, the site below just shows the muffler.

Thanks guys.

Specifically I was wondering if there one a muffler where the inlet and outlet are in line, like in the picture. Would make my life easier as my exhaust is already done, just with mufflers which are likely too loud.

Don't know nothing bout no inline outlets, but I prefer the Borlas to the Walkers. They have a better tone and I've never heard a too loud Borla and I have heard a too loud Walker.

To fit the space, the list is short and loud considering no tail pipe. Flowmaster 40, pn 942444.

A good round walker muffler will be 6 or 7 inches thick with an inch of clearance and much longer but look much better and more original to a seven than an oval. Case lengths range from 13 to 29 inches and the ports are offset on both ends. I'd avoid glass packs or anything made for tractors.

Unlike an oval, a round muffler can be rotated so the offset can be minimized at the expense of being more or less outboard. The inlet can hug the car so the case clearance to the body is good and ground clearance is good without kicking out the pipe at a weird angle or a tight bend. You just end up with a longer hanger at the outlet. Just figure out how long of a muffler you can fit.

Or like the one I am mentioned a couple of posts ago which is 5 inches in diameter, though a little more costly than the Summit one MiataV8 has shown.
Still the idea is the same, on the other hand don't confuse the great V8 sounds you get from any of these Borlas or Flowmaster performance style mufflers etc, when you install them on a 4 or 6 cylinder motor, it doesn't always translate..

The Borla is the only thing that tamed my Miata and it gave a very pleasing note. I tried 3 other mufflers first so i could have saved myself a lot of money by just going Borla in the first place.

Good point on the round mufflers. I figured that I wouldn't be able to fit a large diameter one there, but wasn't thinking about offset openings. I currently have it set up for magnaflow 4" rounds which I'm pretty sure are going to be well over 92dB. If I could, I would shut up the exhaust to be silent, and only hear the blower whine. Not a fan of the 90° V6 sound.
On that note, my blower/intake could be too loud as well.
