So i have quite a bit of tubes in two different sizes that need to have beads added to them. I cannot find a local shop to so this and it seems that spending $75 for two earls bead tools seems a little high.. may not use them again...

Thoughts on how to do this? They are pretty small so I am not quite sure what will work. I don't have a way to weld aluminum either.

Does the tube need a full bead or just a few to hold the tubes and hoses together?

You can build the most awesome thing in the world but at some point, an 80yr old man in a crx is probably going kick your butt on the track... don't ask me how I know.

Use aluminum rivets, with an aluminum stem. Two or three depending on the tube size. The seal is provided by the hose and hose clamp on the other side of the rivet. The rivet only prevents the hose from sliding of and does not need to be sealed. Just make sure you smooth off the fracture of the stem, if it protrudes at all (which it shouldn't). I use 1/8th rivets and the heads are just the right size.

I've done this using a vise grip with a small ball bearing taped to one side and a nut taped to the other side. The ID of the nut has to be smaller than the ball bearing (or you'll have a punch). With the BB side inside the tube, clamp the grips sufficient to make a dimple in the tube OD. Do this every 1/4 to 5/16 inches around the tube and you'll have enough increase in tube OD that the hose won't blow off.

If the hose and tube don't have to come apart again like in the picture, you can use an adhesive. I don't remember which one I used on the two joints in the middle.

If you have a TIG welder, putting 4-6 blobs along the edge of the tube works very well.

The easiest way of doing this in the absence of a bead roller is to solder a compression olive onto the pipe. There are dozens of different sizes and they are cheap, if you use the aluminium alloy solder it can join all the dissimilar metals so if you have Ali or stainless this will enable you to solder a brass olive to it. Pewter is down at the moment but will chuck a few picks up tomorrow. Can't do this on the ipad

I make them out of a pair of vise grips with the female part of a muffler clamp welded to one jaw and a half of a washer to the other jaw. The muffler clamp has to fit snugly to the radiator pipe. Just vise grip your way around the pipe.

An olive soldered on a pipe.

Image

That wont be sliding off there or chewing up the hose being pused on.

Image

Or you could get really lucky like I did and buy as advertised a " tool thingy" on ebay for £25 that does all sizes of pipe properly
