Hmmmm, I thought I posted this one already. It looks like it didn't take for some reason. It's a custom-bodied Porsche 914. It definitely qualifies as a low cost sports car. The owner did all the bodywork himself. He told me he had $2,500 total in the car, which makes it a pretty low buck, "mock" supercar.

I assume this is an original Shelby Cobra Daytona. There was nobody around to ask, so I'll just assume it is.

Now, if you had an RX-7 with a rusted out body, and a '54 Nash Metropolitan with a great body and an empty chassis, the first thing you'd think about is mushing the two of them together to make one good sports car, right? Well, this fellow did. He ended up stretching the bodywork 10 inches and doing a lot of custom stuff. He told me he did everything but the upholstery and chrome.

It is unique, for sure. It's all RX-7 mechanicals with a clear message telling you about the Nash body. This is what I enjoy most about the show, talking to people who have created a unique automotive vision. And, he basically did it himself too.

This is SoCal, so of course there are Woodies. This one is pretty unusual, though. Cute, huh?

Welcome. It was very impressive. The workmanship was just outstanding.

I hope it was the real deal. If it is a real one, it has been restored to the Nth degree. Usually, you see some hints that a car is older, but not with this one. On the other hand, the Kurtis 500 was just the same - restored to perfection. Some would say that it's better than new. After talking to the owner of the Kurtis (he's sitting in the chair in one of the photos) at some length, I have no doubt that it's real. He's a true car collector and not into reproductions.

I didn't ask about the engine in the 914. I was so impressed with the bodywork the owner did that I spent all my time with him talking about that.

The reproductions ones are very realistic, here is a very short vid I took of my friends at the track, he had just removed the twin mufflers and was trying out a new single he made, the car was very authentic and he just sold it for 65 grand.
My guess is that your photo is not an original Daytona, Lonnie.

The first and most valuable Coupe is owned by the Simeone Museum. It's the only one built in the US and only unrestored (finishes mostly) car. All of the Simeone cars are unrestored as long as they still perform as original. They run it during demonstration days and afterwards you can go inspect/touch/smell it. Value about $8 million. It was Phil Specter's car, hidden/lost for 30+ yrs.

The Simeone Museum is awesome. I had an 8 hour layover in PHL a few years ago and took a cab over to kill a few hours. It was well worth it and it wasn't even a demo day.

I was surprised at how rough around the edges that Coupe appeared. It was clearly built to be a racecar and not a masterpiece. There are many Locosts with better fit and finish but I think it makes it all the cooler.

The real Daytona coupes appear to have a small lip (it's not big enough to call a flare) over the wheel arches. The one from Del Mar does not.

The back side of the rear wing also appears to differ from the pics of real ones bit that is easy enough to change.

I say very well done kit that I'd proudly drive any day of the week.
