Is it the battery breakthrough we've all been waiting for, or is it simply too good to be true?

You decide.

Dat sounds interesting!

It will be a while before we find out if all that is hype or hyperbole.

Multiple Patents still pending but they are going into production later this year?

Sounds suspect to me, such as a stockmarket ploy.

I am not an EE, just a mechanic/electronics technician/avionics technician.

The resistance of carbon decreases with temperature, which can result in thermal runaway. Resistors are carbon and sized for the wattage/heat. This claims to eliminate thermal runaway by internal shorting?

Imho, too good to be true. One could probably create an unrealistic environment to support each claim separately. I suspect they have adopted Western ways.

You will see "double carbon" cells available on Ebay in the next few days!

I know so little (and understand even less) of the chemistry involved in this kind of stuff that I always get the feeling that I'm reading a techno-babble script right out of Star Trek.

Sure is fun, though.

I'm a-gonna put one of those in the Slotus, right after I attach the prop and a parachute like that other thread in here...

I'm not sure exactly what kind of battery "we've all been waiting for" This one has the same energy density of a modern LI-Ion battery and, in fact uses Li Ion as the electrolyte. Only the Anode and Cathode are Carbon. This is according to the original patent holder of dual carbon batteries, DOW Chemical issued in 1989. US patent #4830938

When I see claims made such as
Quote:
Power Japan Plus is also working on a new form of carbon that is entirely organic.
, I sit back and say "WTF?" All plant life, and animal life for that matter, is carbon based. Where they get the Carbon from or how they process it is irrevalent, unless their patent application is for the process, not the item itself.

This is exactly how they get so many stupid investors involved, ie. blind them with BS (cowdung).

In my opinion, the biggest battery holdups for EV's are cost, life, and charge rate...IF* the claims made by this company hold any electrolyte, this would be a significant leap forward in all of these characteristics. But if energy density of the individual battery cells is the singular primary criteria for judgment, then I suppose that these claims might not constitute any significant breakthrough.

Yes marketing speak is one of the most annoying things to sift through in any writing about a technical product, regardless of whether it's trying to drum up investors for new product development or buyers for existing product sales.

* And that's a big if.

Gotcha Driven! I wasn't sure if you were looking for lighter, smaller batteries to replace lead-acid batteries to start our cars, or ????. These dual-carbon electrode batteries are supposedly up to 20% lighter, so that is a big improvement for electric vehicles if they acually come to market. I'd bet that when( if ?) that time comes, there will be a newer, lighter, smaller battery just coming out of the laboratories.

Remember when Sony's Li-Ion batteries began exploding into flames in laptops? New technologies always come with new surprises.
