This seven was first completed in 2009 and put on the road as a VW jeta 1.9 L turbo diesel powered. I enjoyed driving it. But later I changed my mind and swapped the VW diesel for a similar VW 1.9 gas engine which I rebuilt. At the same time I modified the look of the car. Replaced the windshield with Bruntdland aeroscreens and a nre colour (from pale blue to British racing green).

Great car. Why did you take out the diesel? What tranny and adapter did you use? Russ

Thanx

The car worked well with the turbo diesel and I enjoyed the ride. At some point I started thinking about building another seven and selling this one (which I have not done yet). My thought was then that selling a seven with a diesel engine may be problematic; hence the engine swap :) The transmission was a 5 speed manual from my 1991 Samurai via an adaptor available commercially.

That is what I thought you may have used. That Samurai tranny is a nice box. Very light. What kind of RPM's are you turning in 5th at 70MPH?

Sorry my friend, I don't know. With the original diesel high torque low rpm engine I did not think that I needed a tacho. I drove the thing by ear. Now with the Jeta gas engine ( and a performance cam) I should set up a tachometer (easier to set up now that I have a distributor). The Samurai transmission is a good, light one (55 lbs), reasonably precise. One thing to check if you are thinking of it is the gear ratios and compatibility with your differential gear. Remember that the Samurai delivers power through a transfer box, so what rpms come out to the drive shaft have to be adequate to the rear axle diff. All these numbers are available on the web. The folks that are keeping Samies and converting them to VV engines know a good deal about all this.
