Well, figured I may as well get this thing started. Read alot of your posts, Moti...freakin genius man, love the work. Mr. Hempy, great videos!
In any case, I have not read any of the books, just a ton of info on the web over the past three months, borrowed a welder from a friend, learned to weld, and finally...this past weekend, I built the Build Table, complete with wheels for easy mobility, and a bottle opener to assist in toasting my successes.

well now i know what to do with my extra opener. Is the table level with the wheels? My plan is to put on solid wheels once i have all the work that requires a level table to be done.

What year R1 motor?

YOU, my friend, are a genius!
A built in beer bottle opener, that is just freagin' brilliant!

Looking forward to see another R1 build and just like Jerry the blue devil I'm interested knowing what year of R1 you'll be using.

BTW, I personally don't like wheels on a table that supposed to be super steady.
I found myself working on the frame when I'm on the table plenty of times.
I'd look into mounting them on a hinge on the side of the legs if it was my table, but that's JMHO.

They have the little lock things on the wheels so that the table doesn't roll away from me, so i think I have that covered. Being able to move the table out of the way was a critical element of the negotiating process for this project. The table is also at just the right height to roll right over the top of all my brewing equipment and remain tucked up against the wall during the week when I'm not working on it, and thereby not extending the footprint of my hobbies beyond what's reasonable for domestic tranquility.

As far as the engine goes, I'm thinking I read somewhere that engines from the last ~3 years are best because of....something that I need to look up again. But I've got time to find that out. I'm looking at building a +442 frame with the boxed Caterham styled front end, and doing the nose myself from sheet metal.

Is the top of the table flat and level? Many garage floors slope toward the door to prevent flooding and can be several degrees.

Hmm, the last three years have seen 3 different engines -
04-06 (code 5VY) is a 5 valve per cyl motor rated at 172 hp, 07-08 Yamaha went back to 4 valve per cyl and the rated output was a tiny bit higher, and the 09 model is a completely different beast with a cross plane crank shaft.

Either of the first 2 are the ones I was thinking of. Which one would you recommend for a build?
I think the '09 would be too new and pricey, no?

I'm clueless.

I think that anything from 04 and up will be fine, but than again there are many locosts running pre 04 motors and are just as good.
I'm using 05 in mine.

Quick question to the crowd...
The Roll Bar? For regular street use, no racing, is it really needed? I have seen a few sevens without them, and I feel that they look a whole lot better, and probably have less wind noise. What are the odds that this thing is gonna roll over on the street?

Thoughts?

A roll bar does more than protecting your nugget if the shiny side goes does down.
It stiffen the car by a good bit, you can set the rear down tubes to protect the gas tank in case of a (much more common) rear end crash.
Adding side braces like the ones you can see on Chet's build is a great idea too.

I don't know if you've ever driven a seven on the street but even with my short experience on a sunday drive I'd want to have as much protection as possible, the thing is tiny and completely invisible to anything taller than your average car.

If you haven't visited the R1 forum yet, here's a link to their parts FS section, I'm sure you'll find it very useful.

Moti is right, its a good area to get parts and thats about it. Some guy on there is building a trike and kept posting progress pics. He was always talking about how he got hammered and welded this and that part of the frame. Then suspension, oh wow... he basically bought some car stuff and eyeballed it together. I made a nice long post about safety and suspension geometry offering help... and man did i get flamed! i got called out as a "wanna be" for being negative towards his "backyard american engineering". Other then the for sale section, its just a site with a bunch of internet jockies... unfortunatley they ride R1's like me :BH: . Ah well
If you have some time to waste take a look at this death trap i speak of:
http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=237156

Also did you say its just tall enough to fit over your brewing equiptment  ? Now you know you have to post pictures of that!

Well, not quite a pic of the mating of the build table and the brewery as the cleaning of the garage to allow for the unified storage footprint still hasn't taken place, it's still just a theory, but I'm sure it will all work out since I now the table will slide over the top of the kegs and the burners by design.

In any case, I'm going to the steel supplier tomorrow morning. The McSorley plans call for 16 gauge tubing, does that sound correct? And I'm thinking of having them cut the tubing into 6' sections so I can fit them in the Blazer, there aren't any pieces needed over 6', right?

Can't wait to get started on this thing!
