I'm back after a very long break from my build. Long story short is my frame was not to my liking and my engine had warped valve guides... And the way to fix that on a Volvo engine was way more work than I wanted to deal with. I work at a Volvo service department and even our lead techs said that work was enough for them to through in the towel... But, I've drafted some new plans for my frame that are more of a Caterham replica than the older Lotus. I'm still in the very early stages (again) of my construction and engine re-build. Here's where I stand now.

I got the block in late December

I sent the block off the the machine shop (01/07/11)

Got the nose in (01/14/11) The guys at Coveland were extraordinary to work with! Much props!

Back from the machine shop (01/18/11) Looks amazing!

Yes, I know that the engine is going to be stupid big in the frame... but that's half the fun.

How about some background? What kind of engine is that? Aren't valve guides just replaceable? Welcome back, did you change your ID?

Oh, and good luck...

Oops, sorry guys. Its a Nissan vg30dett engine. And yes, the oil squirters are factory. I've always been a Nissan guy so I thought it would be good to mix two projects I love. It's going to be close to the Caterham CSR frame, with some 442 tweaks here and there.

Yes, valve guides are replaceable, but it was a Volvo white block engine. Volvo engines require a certain heating and cooling... and heating and cooling and hea... you get the idea. A process the head goes through to properly replace the valve without and oil seepage. Plus twin turbos are badass! Thanks for the re-welcoming. I've been gone too long and couldn't bear to give up my build over a few issues. If weather permits, more frame work and pictures this weekend.

Did the Volvo have oil in the exhaust ports?

There was a bit. The engine probably is 100% rebuildable, I just wasn't going to enjoy it... So I changed platforms to something that would keep me more engaged during the build.

Just a few frame updates. I was lucky enough to get some decent weather to enjoy the outside work shop this weekend.

ImageCross bar design borrowed from the CSR.
I'm currently waiting on the heads for the VG and actual Caterham CSR lower A-arms to come in. Once I get those, the front will be able to be completed.
