Bits of progress here, and bits of progress there.

The most substantial is the frame aft of the passenger area.

I got the chassis flipped over, which seems like a big milestone.

There was about 1/2" of twist diagonally from the passenger rear to the driver's front corner. It easily clamped flat against the table, so things should be good. It's definitely a sign that changing up position and angle for welding is a good idea. I'm sure that if I had finish welded all of the top joints before flipping I would have had problems.

I considered getting two engine stands to hold the chassis rotisserie style, but as light as the chassis is, I think it's easier just to pick it up. Plus, buying three engine stands for one project seems like a bit much.

I picked up a 6 spd transmission and LSD differential.

Some assembly required.

But, no body (as in people) removal, I trust.

Cheers,

Damn! That front slip angle is way too large and the Ackerman is just a muddle.

The airbag went off, and it looked pretty bad from the front. However, almost all the damage was in front of the front bumper support.

I think the driver did just fine.

A couple of weeks ago, I had an image of my Alpine looking a bit like your Miata. Topped a small hill, only to find a farmer mowing the roadside. Mowing the roadside you say? Just go around him. Well, he was mowing BOTH sides while backing up! And on a gravel road.

Yes, the old sphincter did good.

The miata is scrapped, and I'm right about at the break even point on it.

The engine is up for auction now, just in case anyone wants a nearly new one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2009-Mazda-Miat ... 85&vxp=mtr

Hopefully that will give me cash to keep moving forward a bit.

I've hooked up the Miata flywheel, starter, fuel injectors, and part of the intake manifold to the ranger engine.

Image

I set the transmission inside the frame to get an idea of spacing, and I realized that I accidentally made a live axle rear end frame when I'm planning on IRS. oops.

Image

I'm working on making some new motor mounts.

Image

I'm cutting these out of 3/8" plate, which will be heavy duty enough I think.

I've got my Ranger 2.3 and my NC Miata 6 spd mated up and I'm in the process of placing them in the chassis.

Does anyone foresee problems if I grind one of the support ribs of the transmission a bit? It would let me slide the engine about 3/4" of an inch further back.

Image

Hopefully that would be enough for this tab on the bottom of the transmission to slide over the bottom frame rail.

Image

Is there anything up top that I need to worry about clearance wise that I haven't thought about yet?

I'm planning on letting the oil pan hang below the frame by an inch or so in the vague hope of being able to put a hood on the car some day. I'm not exactly sure what that will look like until I lift the frame up.

You should be ok grinding down that support on the trans so you can clear that rail. I don't see you having any issues doing just that one.

keep up the good work.

What about grinding on the top and bottom so that I can lift the frame up, and stick the oil pan down below the frame?

It seems like it should be ok, but then again maybe Mazda put those supports there for a reason....
