I like your 1/2x1 tubing. I used that size for my front fender brackets.

The suspension brackets are tacked in place and it was great to finally hang the front suspension and have everything move up and down freely. Just a great feeling. Still working on the rear suspension, and I need to build the shock mounts, but I'm hoping to get the car on its wheels soon. I'm anxious to dismantle the build table because it's huge and it gets in the way.

Yo Nick!
Looking good! Yep, that first time you hang the suspension on and move things up and down it really feels good, doesn't it? Congratulations on making that milestone!

Now, be sure to finish welding the suspension brackets on BEFORE you go for a test drive, OK?

X2

And don't forget to reinforce those rear brackets. There have been failures due to the bracket overhanging the Chassis tube.

Thanks rx7locost for the tip but you're too late. Two weeks ago I had a major failure of two of the four brackets. Came real close to loosing the rear end. They must have been broken for a while. I think I developed a fix for them. You can see them at the Midwest Se7ens Gathering. Russ

Hey Trialsman do you have any pics of your bracket failure ? I wish folks would post more pics of stuff that broke. I plan on it. Mistakes are how we learn and I have no problem asking for advice. I may not take it but I ask :P

Sorry to hear that Russ. I thought this topic comes up every year or two. The NooB's need to be told reminded as it isn't in the "book". At least you are writing this post so I know it wasn't a deathly failure. I was thinking that an angled cut on a 1" sq tube should be enough. Weld on X's

Looking forward to next week!

This is extremely useful information. Thanks. I'd actually thought about doing exactly that kind of gusset, but figured they'd be overkill, since I hadn't heard of any problems. Now I have.

I originally planned to place the inside of my 2" brackets flush with the M tubes, but I didn't like that much overhang, so I offset them a bit, protruding 1/8" into the cockpit. Now it looks like that's not enough, so I'll be adding the gussets. I'll have to trim the side panels to go around them.

That's got to be a lot of stress to tear those brackets loose. How much horsepower are you putting out, Russ?

Nick, those brackets don't get torn off, they flex repeatedly and then break. That is because the outside flange is unsupported.

I think Russ has a crossflow Ford. I'd expect it to be ~100-120 HP.

Vroom, you can see it in person next week at the Gathering. It is not that far from you. Russ

Here is the link (http://www.locostusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6959&start=0&hilit=trailing+arm+bracket+failure) to a discussion on this subject, from a while back, which might be of interest.

Thanks for the link, Walt. And rx7locost, your analysis makes perfect sense. A gusset should fix the outer arm in place, eliminating any bending.

Very interesting! As I am using a narrow Sprite axle I can use a 1.5" x 1" tube with the bracket welded to the 1.5" side. I have been saved what could have been a BIG mistake!

Come on Russ, with the right selection of goodies, most engines are able to get close to 100 HP/liter normally aspirated (Chuck's Law :) ). So to get 100HP for 1.3 litters shouldnt be that tough. It's only money.
