good eye, it's actually a 67 though. That's my roomie's car and he's very slowly (mostly waiting on me to weld things as an excuse) putting a 6 liter LS motor and t56 into it in place of the hack job of a 351w/c4 combo that it had.

constant work on the nose. cleaned up the mold pieces so they were ready for work.

test fitted it on the car - everything fit really nicely

Image

Image

laid up the first carbon piece - the entire piece should weigh about a pound more than the current scuttle. a fair amount of weight savings

Image

pull it off tomorrow and lay up the other piece

That takes some serious dedication to get a full nose that far - well done.

Yo Tongboy-
Shoot, a little sanding, some bondo, slap some Krylon on it, that'd be good to go! You can cover the rough places with "Tire Rack" and "SCCA SOLO" stickers!

Seriously, that's looking good, and like Andrew said it must have taken a lot of dedication to get that far. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished product!

No kidding! The running joke around our shop is... if you want something done quickly, hire Tongboy. He's the Red Label of car building :D

aww, schucks. You're still the person to go to if somebody wants it right the first time instead of just done

The first piece came out of the mold very nicely. there are a few flaws but in general the gel coat and everything worked out far better than the molds did.

Image

We layed up the other two pieces last night. the compound curves were SO much more difficult to work the resin into than the bigger slightly rounded piece. the difference was astounding really.

Image

Tonight we bolted the two front nose pieces together and connected them up

Image

trimmed the edges of the top hood area and weighed it.
46" wide kinetic scuttle came out to right under 6 lbs
my original 'hood' aluminum piece was about 6.25 lbs
the combined carbon piece weighs 7.125lbs and will probably settle at 7lbs after it's final trimming. granted of course I have some mounting tabs still to incorporate.

thank you!

initial test fitting of the body parts looks favorable.

Image

The codriver and I ran at packwood this last weekend.
some very fun and very fast courses.

car ran reliably all weekend - the non-protected rear fenders didn't exactly hold up...
Image

just means they need to be fixed to be stronger!

playing on the larger course encouraged a lot of learning - it's amazing just how fast the car can be driven and just how far off even the fast DP cars were... motivation to catch them

tested out a camper combo and my old mans truck. it made the weekend much easier - no going to and from a hotel and it was fantastic having everything on hand that was needed.

Image

I'm looking forward to using it for the rest of the season.

Next event is in a month. I'm hoping to have my poor man's IR tire temp senders on the car by then as well as the body & front splitter and a few small changes.

I think the biggest improvement I'll get out of the car is more driving time.

OUCH! Wow, was that done by a cone? Looks more like your car was attacked by the "Metal-Munching Moon Mice" from Rocky and Bullwinkle...

OTOH, the carbon-fiber layups are looking good! I'm a-waitin' to see them all finished!

Bummer about the fenders. Time for some cone catchers?

Ouch - that cone penalty is gonna cost a bit more than 2 seconds!

I'll try to swing by early next week. Let me know if you need me to bring anything.

I am looking forward to seeing how the carbon fiber holds up to abuse. I know it is a tonne of work but eventually I would also like to make a carbon fiber body. You can get the material in some amazing colours too would love to get a nice orange weave or something.
