Do what I did - explain the "high cost of crucial safety machining", and how much you could save by having a lathe & doing lots of it yourself! :D

Funny, that's how I got my shop press... -- I needed wheel bearings done on my WRX; had to pay someone else 100$/hour to do it... So, the next time, I bought a press for 150$, and have saved so much money since (LOL NOPE).

How would she feel about you buying a lathe? Well, tell her it is a mental health therapy tool. Kind of like all that stuff they buy for Yoga, etc.
I know I'm in a much better mood when I get some Garage Time with the build....just sayin'

It's just a steel tube, you could use a pipe cutter. You'd have to file the inside edges, but they cut true. A lathe is definitely nice to have though. I didn't realize how much I used one until I didn't have access to one anymore.

True! Though, I don't have a pipe cutter with that type of diameter capabilities. And I already own a horizontal band saw. And it cut straight enough that once I hit it with the vertical belt sander, i'll be good to go. Though, even that is probably unnecessary. I made sure the orientation of the housing was the same when I made both cuts, so any variance in angle, is carried to both cuts, and therefore, they are congruent to one another. I'll probably be tacking it together today.. though, who knows, I have some work I have to get done for my apparel business (BLAH) so I might not get anything done on the locost today.

Go figure, I can go a year without touching it, and not really have too many feelings about it, but once I might need to skip working on it for 20 minutes over a lunch I get some serious depression.

Well, Always been a huge huge fan of the Donkervoort D8 GTO; but had never seen the Bare Naked Carbon Edition. I am literally almost throwing up because this car is so gorgeous. The BA7 will definitely be taking some design cues from this - specifically the taillights. I'd love the headlights too, but I can't see a feasable way of creating that. ... Yet. Screw the Lotus 7 replica; I want a D8 GTO BNCE Replica!!

Got the rack back from the machine shop (which is actually more of a porsche/jaguar/lotus/land rover shop (go figure!)), looks great! Now I just need to weld the pinion and housing, and put this puppy back together, and pray!

After re-reading the entirety of Keith's build diary in the past few days (whew that was a read), I'm about 100% less worried about screwing stuff up. The amount of times that dude re-did pieces, parts, and entire systems is almost mind boggling, but I love it. It shows that even someone famililar with the miata, racing, etc.. doesn't get everything right the first go-around either, and he seems to be doing pretty well with the Seven these days! (Or, at least back in 09 when he stopped updating :()

On the left is the newly machined rack end.. on the right, the OEM end (with a few lock washer test cuts).

i don't know about that Donkervoort but I think you have a good start on a true classic with that vehicle on the left side of the photo.
