is your car the stock width or is it wider, my car is mc sorley wide, and i am using fuel injection so i needed a tank with an internal pump, ford explorer two door fit the bill, it has an internal pump, return and everthing you need, i even have all the emmission stuff connected including the sealed filled cap inside the trunk.

it can be shortened if you like just by cutting off one end as all the stuff you need is at the other end.

most aftermarket tanks have the fittings through the top and for f/i with an external high pressure pump that will not self prime, you will have to blow into the filler neck to push the fuel over the hump, once there, it will just syphon which is o.k. till you run out of fuel and have to do the blowing trick again.

my tank holds 19 gallons because i live in the middle of nowhere so i can't have a car that needs a tank of gas to get to the nearest gas station, gas in my town has been $4.50 or there abouts for months now but in my nearest city, some 65 miles away its $3.65 a gallon so when i go there i need to bring some back in the tank.

John, I'm building a +442, so it should fit. Good info! I'm not sure if the miata has a return type fuel system, but either way, it would work fine. Good info on the aftermarket tanks and priming. That would be annoying. Plus, an explorer is real easy to find in the junkyard (it is a Ford, afterall), so that = good!

Pete, thanks! I'll check it out!

Been real busy with life the past few days, and then a huge snowstorm last night, so haven't been doing too much on the car. Continued stripping the miata tuesday night, have a bunch of parts all over my build table, so I need to clean clean!

Who can I contact on this forum to delete another Login I've got for some reason that I didn't even know I had?

Sorry Brad, I approved both posts, but didn't read them carefully enough to figure out what was going on. It's like me, sometimes I feel I run in circles so fast I see my own butt going around the corner in front of me. Which is better then a frontal lobuttomy, but that's another problem.

It's probably easier to ignore it. In the upper left of the window it says who you are logged in as. Dave Hempy could do that but he's busy with twin newborns...

Haha, no problem.. glad you approved them anyway, didn't want to remember what I had typed in the first place! I'm not sure why it logged me on as the other name (I must have signed up with that a long time ago when I was just hoping to someday build one!), but yea, I'll just pay more attention.

And congrats to Dave! Twins... oh the day. My dad has twin sisters, my mom is a twin.. I'm so screwed!

Hey guys, is it totally out of the question to use the miata fuel tank and pump, etc? Any reason why? I have someone interested in buying mine but don't want to let it go if I can use it. I read you can use a tank out of an explorer so I can't imagine that the miata tank wouldn't fit. Though I haven't seen the shape of it... Maybe that's why people don't typically use it?

Oh, DAMN, that was funny! Never heard that one before!

But ya know, we should move this nonsense out of Brad's build log, and over into MY build log, with the rest of the nonsense!

Haha no worries, I get excited when I have replies, even if they're nonsense!

re the return on an exploder tank,
they have an internal pump, and an open return line in the top of the tank at one end, all in a handy cover plate which includes the sender for the guage and a multyplug to power it all.

if you have a return system using a regulator on or near the fuel rail it just connects to the return.

look at your filter, if it has just one "in" and one "out" then there will be a separate return line, if however there is one "in" and an "out" on the same end of the filter, then you need to regulate that return line somewhere along its length, that can be next to the filter or anywhere, all the way to inside the tank.

if you need an in tank regulator, just put one on the return line outside the tank, it doesn't matter wether its inside or outside on that same line, note, down stream of the regulator is only flow with no pressure as the return line is open.

to connect a fuel line to the tank, you can use the special plug in connectors or a 3/8 compression fitting for the flow and a 5/16 compression fitting for the return this method is cheap, easy and secure.

if you need a convenient way to regulate your fuel and the pressure will be 60psi, you can use a c6 corvette filter which regulates the fuel to 60psi, giving a system that doesn't need a regulator at all, the filter has a return to the tank built in.

John, I'm pretty sure the regulator on the miata is right at the fuel rail, so an open return would be ideal. I'm still hoping to maybe use the Miata tank, and not have to worry about any of that at all. Fully stock system, later upgrading the pump/injectors for a turbo application.

About the Miata fuel pump/tank etc. If you haven't seen it already there was a discussion about Miata fuel pumps and fuel systems in general etc here,
http://www.locostusa.com/forums/viewtop ... 0&start=15

This is part of what I posted on that thread,

"If you order a plastic fuel cell (Jazz comes to mind) just cut a hole in the new tank the same size as the one in the Miata tank and mount the Miata stuff in it. If your new tank is taller than the Miata you will probably have to change the pump mounting hardware length so the pump is mounted near the bottom of the tank. You might also need to modify the fuel level float arm so the float has full travel from empty to full.

I used a universal fuel sender & gauge from JC Whitney that is adjustable for various height fuel tanks.

If you use a plastic tank you should make up a metal ring to match the screw holes in the cover so the new bolts/nuts you use will have a solid mounting surface inside the tank. For each of my small panels where the fuel gauge and fuel pump goes into my tank I made rings from 3/8" thick alum.

For ideas, see this article on my website how I mounted the original Suzuki motorcycle fuel pump in my Jazz fuel cell,"

http://dmr-architect.com/~locouki/fuel-pump.html
_____________________________________________

I've also read that the normal fuel pressure for the Miata is 45 psi.

Wishful wishing:

But really, I have exactly 6" between the widest points on the seats... I might just be able to use them! At least for now.. until I get something I want more.

Since the drive shaft is the only big thing in the back part of the tunnel (assuming the pinion flange isn't too far forward or too large in diameter) maybe you could have the tunnel taper down in width near the seat area? i.e. don't have the width of the tunnel constant from front to rear. You will have to allow a little gap for the seat belts to come up along the sides of the seats.

You must of had one loud "Vrooom-vrooom" session. The ceiling tiles are coming down!!
