One project isn't enough, so might as well have two.
I struck a deal with Joe Garrison a few days ago on his R1 project. After a few phone calls to shippers and talking with Joe I knew that I REALLY needed to pick this up myself. That led to some hasty negotiations with Wifey Dearest and a purchase of a utility trailer from Craigslist on Tuesday afternoon.


Wednesday morning at 5am we left Summerville, SC bound for Broken Arrow, OK. Day one we drove for 15 hours with a few pit stops and spent the night in Clarksville, AR. Thursday morning hop out of bed and start rolling the last couple of hours to Joe's place... we got there a few minutes after 9am and started sorting and loading. Joe's movers didn't do him any favors during his last move; they just tossed stuff into boxes. He had to sort to send the right stuff home with me.




Once she was all bundled for the trip...a tarp and stretch wrap are your friends.

we headed back toward SC and spent night 2 in Tupelo, MS. Yesterday (Friday) we were up before the buttcrack of dawn for the last 10 hour leg back to Summerville.

4:30 pm roll into the driveway.
5:pm she's in her new home next to TETANUS



Today I get to pull both projects out of the garage and do a little cleaning / organizing.

Your nom de plume is clearly well deserved. Maybe a slight modification is in order though. "WayTooBusy"? Or "TooBusy^2"?

While I was reading your travel post, I wondered why you stopped in Clarksville ARizona... Then
the old gray matter kicked in and realized ARkansas made a lot more sense. Very nice trailer
you acquired too. Now if you can just work the "we'll also need a fishing boat" aspect in to the Mrs.,
you may become a homebuilder god
I look very forward to seeing the progress on both projects. What engine does your newest acquisition
have? Looks like four carbs, or a manifold sitting in the well. Is it a Maita build?

bernman - I got the nickname for a reason. I've actually slowed down a good bit to focus on the build(s). I sold my fishing guide service and let go of my monthly writing gig with Coastal Angler magazine. Now a fish when I feel like it and work on the car when I feel like it with no clients to entertain.

LionsPaw - The engine is Yamaha R1. 1000 cc superbike motor with 150 hp in stock trim. Reading the specs it looks like something around 11,000 rpm redline. With the 6 speed gearbox it tips the scales at a whopping 175 lbs.

As for the boat, I sold my powerboat several years ago and switched to kayak Fishing. I'm on the Wilderness Systems Fishing Team.

That should make some REAL nice music at redline!

I think so. There are custom equal length headers with a 4 into 1; 3" diameter collector. I'm leaning toward putting on a 3" pipe and turnout with a slip in cheater straight thru muffler.

One of the neighbors has a 98 R1 and it screams like a banshee when he gets on it.

I spent a little time after work yesterday sorting through the small bits, nuts and bolts that Joe sent with me.

Trying to get common items and common sizes (thread diameter and pitch, not length) together

About 2/3 done

Then there's the other stuff that aren't nuts and bolts.

I've got switches and pedals and wire connectors and rivets and clecos and don't know what else.

Looks like enough to build a car tho.

TETANUS will or should get done first. I've completed all the pre-assembly and mechanical fab work on her. The body is 95% ready for primer and the engine/trans are ready to drop back into place. I can re-assemble her in a day , then probably a weekend or two for wiring. My best guess is a few laps around the neighborhood before Labor Day.

I need to go through the R1 project with a fine toothed comb just to get familiar with her.

Of course there's a HUGE part of my brain that wants to fire up the R1 and hear it roar. Joe did the cooling plumbing and most of the wiring is in place...

It's great to see Joe's project get a nice new home.

And I'm glad he looks like he's doing a lot better then the pictures in his build log.

I finished sorting all the loose bits last night. Had to go to Horrible Freight and buy a couple of organizers for the nuts, bolts, screws, and doo-dads. I think I should probably get one or two more just to be safe

The stack of receipts, documentation and books Joe sent with me is pretty impressive.
Hopefully a fully detailed and sorted spend log will make the trip to the DMV a cake walk.

Don't fergit to separate the metric from the SAE doo-dads...

metric in one, SAE fine in another, SAE coarse in a 3rd, need a 4th for rivets, clecos, and clamps, and a 5th for electrical switches and crimp ons
