Again, all pictures were lost.

No actual work on the R1 project this weekend, instead piddling with tools and working on the daily driver BMW.

The Horrible Fright bead roller got a reinforcement upgrade. Welded on some 2x2x.062 wall box tubing to stiffen her up.

Then check the runout on the shafts and dies. The gears are terrible, but the dies are only about .003 TIR... not too bad.

THen I looked around for a hand wheel. What did I come up with??? The 10" Mountney spare I had lying about. It's a bit small, but works for the time being.

Walked out into the garage yesterday morning and had to decide between pulling all the panels off to sand the frame and get ready for a color change or move more slowly and spend a couple more hours on the scuttle.

Stared at the car and sipped my coffee, stared and sipped, stared and sipped... I'm working on the scuttle. I've never been quite happy with it. When I picked the car up from Joe it was skinned in yellow aluminum with a few dings and dents. As it sat in the garage and I worked on TETANUS it got a few more dings and scratches.

So a couple of weeks ago I pulled the yellow off and used it as a pattern for a new bare ally skin. I cut, free hand formed and it looked (and fit) just like the yellow skin. Problem was the yellow skin didn't fit all that great. The underlying frame had some high spots and lot spots so it wasn't a nice even plane.

Bust out the saw and cut away the second hoop.
That gave me two points of contact, the front hoop and the dash board hoop. A little fiddling with bends and massaging aluminum and I get a much nicer and supported fit.

Next order of business was get rid of the sharp edge. I could put plastic trim on it, but that just looks cheap. Instead I wanted a nice folded lip like on John's SV clone. My work isn't as pretty as his, but it still looks WAAAAY better than a cut edge.

The other thing I wanted was a decorative bead. It's not just decorative, it provides a lot of stiffness to the scuttle.

I know I'm just putting off sanding the frame, but I'm a lot happier with the scuttle now.

Stupid edit time limit. I'll update pics later.

Anyway, I spent yesterday with the small angle grinder and a flap wheel taking loose paint off the R1 project. Even with ear plugs my ears are still ringing after about 3 hours with a grinder.

Plant is closed today and I only have 1 conference call scheduled... I think I'll sneak out of the home office about noon and go shoot some satin black on the frame.

Two coats of murder black on the frame. It's a little cool today, so I thinned it almost 1 to 1 with a medium slow reducer. Gives plenty of time for the paint to self level, but have to be extra careful to avoid runs.

Used the SATA knock off detail gun, 1/2 tip, narrow fan, 50 psi line pressure ` 10 psi at the tip.



Not bad looking, Need to let the paint dry, then flip it to get to the hard to reach places.

had some decent weather today, so I got out the spray gun again. Rolled the frame upside down, then on each side so, HOPEFULLY it's all black now with at least 2 coats of satin black on the frame.

Let it cure this week, then I'll start assembling it back into a car next Saturday when I get back from Michigan.

It does... But with the frame sitting on it with the front end hanging off, the two together look a LOT like a rick-shaw... Heehee...

Did a little work this weekend.
First project on the docket was modifying my Brinkman smoker. It had been sitting in the weather too long and was looking a little worse for wear.
I busted out the metal shears and cut 5 inches off the bottom.
Then took the body and rolled a couple of beads on the freshly cut edge to stiffen her up again. Then hammerer a lip inward to make it sit nice and stable on my gar burner base from my turkey fryer.
Headed to the grocery and picked up a 7lb Boston Butt. BBQ for Super Bowl.

Then I decided to pissle with the project a little yesterday.
Took her off the trailer and set on jack stands. Then bolted in the Appleton steering rack and the Quaife reversing box.

This morning I fired up the smoker, filled the water pan, tossed some hickory chunks in the smoke pan, and set the pork and a 1/2 chicken on the grill. Plans for good eats; Chicken for lunch, pork for dinner.

Then back on the R1.
Time to drop the motor back in.
A little careful lowering, some back and forth from side to side around the car and I was able to set it in the frame by myself.


Then I pulled the driveshaft bits and pieces out to see which flanges bolt to the Hawk flange, and the Qauife. Found the right bits including a slip yoke. A little cutting, welding and grinding, and viola - front driveshaft complete. Ready to check balance.


Dog tired, ready for some freshly chopped BBQ and football.
