I got my vin plate installed today. Finally after so many years of building this car I can go take it for a drive outside the neighborhood.

Congratulations Chris! Indescribable feeling, huh? Be careful out there. People do not see these little cars.

Well done!

I'm oh so close to applying for mine. I'm at a point were I could, but the application fee is $525.00. That took me back a bit, so I'm having to save for a few months as my car budget is almost depleted.

Hooray Chris! Here in Washington the Highway Patrol has what they call 'Inspection Lanes'. Drive up, stay with oyur vvehicle and the trooper comes out of their little office and checks your numbers, gathers up your receipts, ask a couple questions. She couldn't find the engine # and I didn't know where it was either. 4AGE Toyota. After a trip back into the office and some time on her computer she came out. I was fearing the worst but she had this little strip in her hand and asked 'Where would you like your VIN plate?'

I feel your excitement. Big congratulations for sure.

Bummer Trochu!

When we were leaving the HIPO lane I asked the officer how much I owed and she said just leave a Nordstrom or MC card and she would take care of it. And then giggled.

VIN was free. Registration was cheap too but not quite as.

Cheers all,

Yeah it sounds like a lot of $$ but considering what they appraise these cars at here $525 is around 2-3% of the value of the car.

Perry,

Put in that perspective it does lower the impact some. However the way WA licensed mine it was by all comparisons I've seen dirt cheap. They didn't put a value on the car, I did. They asked and I told them what I told Grundy for agreed value. And it's titled as a 'Custom'. To be 'Custom' it has to be I think at least 25 years old, in design. Mine is licensed as a 1963 Lotus Super Seven Custom. No smog test required, have a 1963 plate that never needs a tab or replaced, don't need a front plate. Have heard but not officially that mileage is limited. No figures mentioned.

Seems everybody's rules are different. I think I just got real lucky. Had a couple of friends in Iowa that had to jump through hoops practically. How many trips is yours taking Chris? I made 2, Inspection lane and licensing agent.

I think SEMA had a hand in loosening the process.

The car has been a blast to drive and for the most part has been very reliable. I do have some winter plans:

1) engine oil leaks - this engine leaks oil like a sieve. Plan is to replace the oil pan, cam cover, front and rear main seals, and cam seals. I did a compression check and I wont mess with the head gasket at this time.
2) brake rotors - I am stepping up to the 1.8 front brake rotors which are slightly larger. I already have the brackets and already received the new rotors. I am keeping the 1.6 rear brakes but will put on new rotors the same time I put on the 1.8 front rotors. I want to rebuild the calipers but this may take a back seat as my current ones work just fine. Currently, no matter how I adjust the brake bias, the rear locks up before the fronts.
3) Paint - I have already stripped the car down to the frame to send it off for paint at the local community college. Paint color will be Jaguar Velocity blue.
4) Roll bar - my current roll bar is set for SCCA height broomstick test with me with helmet on. I always thought it looked odd with how tall it is. I have a new roll bar main hoop bent that will be a lower hoop.
5) wiring harness - with all the electrical gremlins worked out on the wiring harness and lessons learned, I want to take this harness and build a new one with far fewer splices and simpler.
6) Megasquirt MS3X - another reason for the new wiring harness is I just built a MS3X for the car and it has its own wiring harness for running the engine. Eventually this will be utilized for a turbo set up, but I don't see myself getting that done this winter so the MS3X will be mapped for normally aspirated for now.
7) fenders - I haven't gotten around to fenders yet, but with the new paint, I really need to wrap those up. I have the fenders and will be doing four wheel cycle fenders.
8) New Dash panel - my original dash was a piece of marine plastic that I cut down. It has cracked in a few places and due to changes I have made, there are unused holes. I plan to replace it with a piece of steel welded in.

I have already stripped the car and pulled the engine

Disregard last post on bore sizes. Recalculating for both configs.

Tweaking one of the spreadsheets for balance………

With prop valve, 1.6 front, 1.6 rear, 7/8 and 5/8, 473psi/50% prop, 45.3% rear balance.
Without prop valve, 1.6 front, 1.6 rear, 13/16 and 5/8, 41.7% rear balance.
With prop valve, 1.8 front, 1.6 rear, 7/8 and 5/8, 525psi and 53% prop, 51% rear balance.
Without prop valve, 1.8/1.6, 7/8 and 5/8, 44% rear bal.

I used to think it was one or the other but now I can see that a balance bar without any prop leaves a lot on the table and that having even balance on the bar isn’t very important.

What sizes are you using now?

I don't have my records in front of me, but my recollection is that I used 3/4" front, rear, and clutch master cylinders.

With dual 3/4s, it should balance at 71f/29r.

Here are some combos. Trying to get the balanced (yellow) line (or light blue line if equipped with prop) as close as possible in normal G range to the dark blue "ideal" line.

EDIT: mislabeled one graph. Corrected to show 1.8F/1.6R with prop.
