The rack mounts have turned up, these are for the mk1 /2 escort rack and they are the solid version that do away with the rubbers.

The epas control units turned up today , the blurb below explains how it functions. They are in a well made case and come with the correct plug on the end so its just a matter of a power feed and over ride button.

Image

Corsa Steering Controller - NO KNOBS!

Microprocessor based EasiPAS - Electric power steering assistance, EPAS controller for Corsa B or Corsa C steering columns, fitted or being fitted to any car.

This product is ready to install. All you need to do is to connect an ignition switched +12V and install your own momentary push button on or near the dash. Colour installation and user instructions available in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. Comes complete with microprocessor based controller, connection wires, plug to connect the Corsa ECU, installation manual. You will need a (momentary) push button to match your dash style.

Electric power steering uses an electric motor to assist the driver’s steering effort. The Electronic Control Unit or ECU receives information from sensors and decides which level of assistance the electric motor should deliver to the steering you desire. Systems give more assistance at slow speeds and less assistance are higher speeds, as less steering effort is required to steer when the speed is higher.

When you install a Corsa B or C electric power steering in your vehicle it won´t work correctly because the ECU won’t have or receive information from vehicle speed and engine sensors. EasiPAS solves this problem, by giving you the lowest assistance level at all times which is sufficient for most kit cars and/or rally cars. However should you wish to park, simply press the button and you get a minute of high assistance, after which time the system will automatically revert to the normal low level of assistance.

HOW IT WORKS

When the engine is started the circuit waits 10 seconds for the Corsa EPAS to initialise, other products do not do this! During this period it sends no pulses to the EPAS. After 10 secs the circuit outputs an engine rev pulse to let the EPAS know the engine is running, if the EPAS does not get this signal it turns off to conserve power. After the 10 sec start-up delay the EasiPAS outputs for 1 minute a slow speed signal this will give you 1 minute of high assistance to manoeuvre, after which time EasiPAS will revert to the default state of high speed which puts the EPAS into the low assistance state (as if you are driving at 45+ mph). So you always have this low level of assistance.

Rather than an rotary knob our system uses a momentary contact push button, like a horn switch/button. If you press this button the circuit output goes to the low speed/high assistance state for 1 minute allowing you to park. After 1 minute it automatically reverts to the high speed/low assistance state. Should you need more time simply press again for another minute.

Power steering columns are retrofitted to many vehicles. Corsa steering is particularly popular as the columns are small and can be easily obtained at a breakers yard and online.

Typical applications: Rally cars, classic cars, AE86, Escort Mk1 Mk2, 7 Clones, Opel Manta Ascona Kadett, Westfield, Nova, Minis and many others.

Note this controller only fits Corsa B and Corsa C electric power steering columns.

Uncle Bob- I'm worried either a) life is keeping you out of that gorgeous mancave, or b) you just aren't taking pictures this month. Either would be a shame  ! I look forward to any progress on your build every time I click over here!
Hope everything is OK on your side of the pond! Chris :lurking: always

Dont worry Chris I am still on it :). I am knocking up a fixture to hold the uprights in the mill prior to machining at the moment. I have also been feasting on the other amazing builds that are going on here, so much going on

Bob ( "Uncle" , might grow a beard to go with this title :) )

is Reel Steel still in business?

A few of the American spares shops have gone but Real Steel is still up and running. A friend and I bought a small ranch in Oklahoma about 20 years ago, I have never been there or seen it in the flesh but he goes back and forth about 6 times a year, each time he is there he fills a shipping container with bikes, car bits and engine spares so anything I want gets a free ride back here. I can ebay away and just have it delivered there.

Bob,

down to the nitty gritty about the power steering, we can't get vauxhall corsa steering columns here as they never sold them in the U.S.

have you any ideas as to what american vehicle would have the same column, chevy buick cadilac pontiac saturn or even suzuki honda nissan toyota hundai mazda?

unfortunatly, i live in the middle of nowhere in arizona so i can't just go to the wrecking yards and look and the population in az is a bit sparse so not many cars and consiquentially, not many breakers yards.

John they call it eps in the states not epas like over here . I had a quick look on ebay and there are quite a few cars that use this type of steering column. The Malibu uses it and the Hyundai http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hyundai-Sonata- ... f0&vxp=mtr

the problem is, is there a controller needed and is a stand alone one available and what is the pin out on the units?

kits are available but i am a real cheapskate and don't want to fork out the $600 buck for one. its really a matter of, if i save a few hundred buck on making something, that means i can buy more useful stuff.

Wayne-o, my nearest wrecking yard is 42 miles away and you won't find anything in there that doesn't have a distributor, the next is 65 miles away and when i called and asked if they had anything with electric steering, they asked "whats that, do you mean the switches"

do the steering units need a stand alone controller, if yes does anyone make a plug and play controller for whatever car i pull the electric steering off, be it hyundia, toyota or whatever, i assume they all have different plugs?

if they don't need a controller, then what is required to wire them up because they normally run off the pcm which is not there?

a search on the net shows that a popular electric unit is from a saturn vue, but it needs a controller from portugal to make it work, even then, it is not going to function as it did in the original car without a speed signal and an rpm signal from the pcm.

the above may noy matter but there again it may.

normal hydraulic power steering runs at a constant pressure but the caster angle gives more straight line stability as you go faster to overide the power effect to provide "feedback" so the same may also be true of an electric system, i also believe that in the original application, electric systems rely on torsional load to regulate the amount of power added, the more the load, as in standing still is higher than when driving at speed.

just questions i have to have answers to before i dip my toe in the water.

will my car park itself?
will i die dave?

Bob,
is this a case of "they don't like it up erm, the fuzzy wuzzies!" or "nice one rodney, lubly jubly!"
