That's not 600hp naturally aspirated, though, right? The 185s outperform the 165s on a stock-displacement 302. The only advantage the 165s have is that you can use stock pistons. People like to simplify and claim that smaller heads will result in in better power down low. That's just not true.

AFR heads will easily make 60+hp over ported GT40 heads, arguably Ford's best setup.

The 165s are better down low, you just aren't thinking low enough. Do a back to back comparison test with an overdrive trans and a 2.73 axle, see which head cruises better. On your soul it will be the 165.

If you're running throttled, the port size is very nearly irrelevant.

At full throttle and low RPM you might lose something, but it would likely be lost in the intake runner effects. And if the cam is nontrivial, both will be lost in reversion effects. The port is only a small part of the whole system.
