Another day more rain, more garage time

Needed to make those front shock rockers. I sketched them on 10 gage and started cutting with the zip wheel


In order to make 4 parts look the same with simple hand tools I welded them together to drill the holes.
With the holes drilled and them welded together I could cut and grind and keep the shapes all the same


I welded in some square tube bracing, then it's ready for final shaping.



A couple of hours later after more grinding relief it finally fits. I get full movement.
Last item of the day was to make the pushrods and bolt it all up

A little garage time today with my son. He's home for fall break, so I asked for input on the rear shock layout and the decision between vertical shocks and a rocker setup.
His response was classic. If you can make it cool, why would you do anything else?"

He's right. Either one functions as intended, but the inboard shocks are just cool

A few bits made and tacked in place, ready for final welding tomorrow.

Another garage day and a little more progress.

In order to weld the bra.... Uh, the things the shocks bolt to, I needed to drop the rear subframe.
I pulled out the engine hoist, used a few pieces of rope and made a sling to easily drop the subframe by myself. Once it was out, I crawled under the car and started doing all of those oh so much fun overhead welds.

The rear frame, the brackets, and the strengthening tabs for the brackets. All overhead MIG. A handful of butt joints and a handful of fillets.

Satisfied with the results, subframe back in place and put the engine hoist away.
Ta DAAAAAA
DONE!!!





The batwings are Yamaha R6 pieces, slightly modified. Picked from ebay for 8 bucks a pair.

Next item was to hang the steering column. Some clamps, some magnetic welding angle brackets, and some twine. Eventually I got it where I wanted for height, angle, and wheel position.



Time to clean up and pack for a business trip.

No work on the car net weekend. We're headed to Clemson for the Boston College game.

I'll bite.

How much modification did the R6 suspension parts need? Are they needle roller bearing with thrust bearings in the pivots?

Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

The bell cranks just got bored out to accept a 1/2 inch shoulder bolt. The thrust bearing will be a Teflon washer.
I'll probably come to regret that eventually. This is going to be a streetable autocross car, so not that many miles, just very harsh miles.

Given the cost of the parts, that's probably acceptable, and certainly in line with the locost way.

Any plans to add a zerk to the shoulder bolt, like is done to leaf spring shackle bolts?

Just thought you'd like to know the guys around the shop here have complimenting your suspension setup. The rear pushrod setup looks real nice.

Inboard shocks are just cool. Words of wisdom from a great mind!!

A little garage time today. I had plans to work on exhaust, but parts haven't shown up yet. I guess just as important as having a plan is having a backup plan. Since building is a million little tasks, I just switched to something else on the to do list that I had supplies to finish.

I hung the steering column at the end of the last garage session. This was as good a time as any to build out the rest of the steering shaft. I had u joints in the supplies bin and tubing in the corner.
The u joints are weld on pieces. I welded them, then drilled for 1/4 inch pins. Belt and suspenders for steering components.



This piece of real estate is starting to get crowded.


Everything fits nicely. At this point it "could" be a roller if I took it off the table. More to do at convenient working height though so she's staying on the table for a while longer.

If you guys recall, the seat fits a little too tight for my taste.


I did a mod to the tunnel to gain some much needed space. I need to dress it up some, but you get the idea.
