The T5 should be an excellent match for your engine. I'm using one myself. There are a lot of different T5s, even in Mustangs. Here's a good, but readable webpage on the history and differences ==> http://www.moderndriveline.com/Technica ... istory.htm

The Zetec would be a good engine also. I'm not up on which FWD units can be used in a RWD setups, so I'll have to pass on that issue. Great engines, though.

Hey Chris, nice build there and you're not far from my place, I'm just across the perimeter from you in N.K. I've made it through the T5 info Lonnie, good stuff, thanks for the link.

I pulled the accessories off and gave the Zetec block a shot of black paint.

Lots of work has been going on although there's not much to show except the smoking hole that was my credit card. Parts are starting to arrive so I'm spending more time in the garage and less in front of the computer. Progress of sorts I suppose.

Most of the stuff that's been showing up is working out although I ran into a bit of a snag this morning with my outer tie rod ends. Pretty much everything that came with the car was mid-70s Mustang II When I measured the old tie rod ends they matched the Mustang II part so I ordered them from Rock Auto. When they arrived I tried to spin them on and found that the thread on the new outer tie rod end was fine (9/16 - 18 i think) while the old inner tie rod end was coarse 9/16 - 14 ish).

So now I'm questioning what rack I actually have in this car. Does anyone recognize this from the pictures?

Was just browsing through the build logs, and scratching, and looking at pictures. There was one thing in a picture on your build log that hit me in the face.
Now I'm no engineer, and I don't use no mathematical formulas to figure tensile strength in tension or compression, or fatigue, or span and track, but I do have "spidy senses" that appear once in a while.
Don't look at this as critiquing but as maybe as a way of improving on the build,......... enough said.

I see this as a very critical weak point.

I would suggest plating this top and bottom to strengthen the LBJ at this junction, letting me be able to sleep at night.

The few RM kits that we had used European spec Ford items that I believe we're sourced from the Sierra/Scorpio/Merkur line-up. From memory(don't trust it 100%), the modified front strut/upright, hubs, rotors, calipers and rear differentials were from those models. If I were trying to identify a part, that's where I would begin although those racks are going to be power and mostly RHD.

I concur, in fact the gusseting should tie into the lower shock mount.
The shock mount should sit on top of the plating that sits on top of the arm.
This way most of the weight bearing welds of the lower shock mount are eliminated.
I would slot/fork the plate so it wraps around the LBJ stub to get a second purchase on the LBJ (on top of the LBJ to tube connection).
Then a smaller gusset under the arm, in the same fashion. This will triple the hold of the arm to the LBJ.

Another thing I notice is the angle of the LBJ.
If the chassis is at ride height the joint is already past the center of travel.
It appears the lower ball joint is a tie rod end threaded into a spud, is it possible that the spud has already moved on the end of the arm?
This will become a problem when as the suspension is compressed the joint may reach the end of its range of motion and be damaged or bind the suspension.

Thanks Dan, I'll look at the European angle. So far I've replaced the front and rear brakes with stock Mustang II stuff. The rear diff is from a '71 Pinto according to the tag. These outer tie rod ends are exact replacements for the ones I took off (Mustang II) with the exception that the female thread is too coarse. I'll get it figured out eventually.

As for the lower ball joint area and angle thanks for the advice, I've been eyeballing it as well thinking it needs some help. Not sure why it's angled up so far. I'm generally happy with this kit and the head start it gives me but there's been a certain amount of head scratching while figuring out what the original builder had in mind and what to do to correct these kinds of shortcomings.

Hello again, it's been a while. The car's done ... if that's a thing. As you may have noticed there's a bit of a gap in the timeline, soon after I started building I decided I liked building better than posting. It's time now to fill in the gap.

This site and all of you have been a huge help, especially Zetec7. His encouragement and advice were invaluable. Thanks Mike!
