I am just starting to part out my Rx8. It is a Florida car so virtually no rust. If you need any parts let me know and I can check out their condition.

Right now I've got everything but the body from my donor car but thanks.

Adding rims and tires makes it look a lot more done than it is. I've got it sitting at ride height so I can set up the shock mounts. Rims are 16" off an early S2000. The RX-8 18" were just too big in width and height for the car.

Also the front upper control arms looked way off to me as they are angled way up. I have another RX-8 here that is my DD and it's upper arms are the same way. I have to assume it's intentional on mazda's part. Here is Mazda stock photo of the ND Miata suspension with the same up angle which is shared with the RX-8- Image

I'm kind of jealous of the Defender parked next to it. I would love to have one in Florida. However they are stupid money over here.

I'm actually in Austin Texas and yes they are stupid money. My day job is building custom Defenders. The one my car is next to is ~$130k truck. We've swapped in a turbocharged 2015 Chevy 4.3 V6. Makes LS power but weighs ~150lbs less and is a few inches shorter.

I see you're in Sarasota. I lived there for a few years a while back. Was a mechanical engineer at Mote Marine. We enjoyed our time there.

Yes I really like Sarasota, I am from England originally but have been here for 10 years. After seeing your picture of the defender I looked up them up and in the UK you can get a reasonable on for under 10,000 pounds. Here one with double the miles is $25,000.

Hi! I'm really excited looking at your project, as I'm considering the same setup. Have several questions though
- do you plan to use mx5 nc short driveshaft or it will be something custom?
- will you use this long support frame which is going from tranny to diff?
- which steering rack you are planning to use?

Driveshaft will be a shortened one from an automatic RX-8. Those are steel and can be modified easily.

The trans/diff frame makes the tunnel too wide. I'll be using custom mounts to the frame for both the trans and diff.

I'll be using the RX-8 rack. I'm hoping I can gut the motor out of it to drop some weight.

I should have some more progress to post in the next week or so. I'm waiting on some parts from the machine shop to get the shocks mount up. They are making the front rocker arms and rear lower shock mounts.

Made up the front diff mount today. Hooked into the two lower bolts that originally went to the power plant frame. I used a bushing setup I bought from a 4x4 company called rough stuff specialties at the ends that bolt to fabbed mounts off the rear subframe. Hoping the machine shop finishes up my suspension pieces this week. Would be nice to have this thing rolling around finally.

Installed the rear lower shock mounts for my GAZ shocks today.

First was to cut off the original shock mount flush and then drill and tap what was left-

Then screw in and loctite the adapter I had machined up. The machine shop had some spare Titanium kicking around and used that. High tech

Here it is with the shock in place. Now need to make the top attachment point.

Early Christmas! Arms came from the machine shop and they look awesome. Each arm uses two sealed angular contact bearings for the pivot held in with a circlip(Bearing #3001-2RS, 12mmx28mmx12mm).

Those had to cost a pretty penny! I see at least three fixture operations, and the stock thickness is up there!

Looks so sexy there should be laws against the thoughts it creates. 8)

Some people never have anything except ideas. Go do it.
Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

I actually worked a deal with the shop and they were free! I just have to do a tune up and replace the knock sensor on his daughters old Lexus SUV.

Today's update is brought to you by... Rear Shocks. The rear of the car is now weight bearing! Next up is the fronts.

It rolls! Kind of a milestone for me. It's kind of a car now that you can push it around. Next to check off the list is the steering column then engine and trans. Wanted the column in first so I don't run into issues with the engine being in the way etc.
