Yes, mine is much the same. I was driving walking speed through a crowd of people while leaving a car show and one passerby sarcastically commented "of COURSE you just HAVE to wear a HELMET". I tipped my head/helmet firmly into the hoop loud enough to make a good 'craaack'. Passerby says "Ooohhhh, okay".

I don't think it to be likely with my build. I have the longer cockpit space but am only 5'7". going to have my seat a bit forward when actually driving but able to slide back for easier ingress egress due to my disability. The height is plenty high to allow a helmet to clear a broomstick test. Also my plates are pretty large compared to some others so it is further back than it may first appear. All in all I don't think it will be an issue, but ya never know.

This is how I cut my tubes for fish mouth.
For straight angle cuts, I use the vise base, that can be set at the right angle.

I'd say, "That's not what your mom said" since I'm so mature and sophisticated (for a mech). Then he kicks the car. There are no winners here. Try not to get any on you.

can anything be done in the rear with the X roll canter. I got the front what seems to be pretty good, but still trying to get design more or less figured out geometrically before I make up the jig

Need to figure out how much camber gain I want but not sure how much roll I will have.

Video update. Getting differential positioned and suspension pickup points figured out. Since I am using a 225/45r15 I have to have the pickup points 2.5" higher than plans. That puts the loer arm level at 5" ride height

In case you aren’t aware the two little notches circled below area a designed-in failure point intended to save the unibody of damage from minor accidents. Power improvements sometimes cause the diff to break in that location. With the Duratec I expect you’ll be making a good bit more torque than a stock Miata so it may deserve some attention. Inexpensive weld-in reinforcement plates are available.

Been poking around the forums and FB page and it is time to start up my build log.

My name is Matt and I am located on the central coast of California. I am Building a 442 chassis based on Haynes, Voduu, and McSorley plans

Parts: NB miata uprights, Differential 4.30 ratio, Brakes, steering, and other bits
NC miata 5 speed transmission and drive shaft
2.5L Duratec engine,

I have a bad left knee so some design adjustments may be made to facilitate ingress/egress due to my poor lower left leg extension strength and limited knee flex of about 110 degrees

as of 8/14/23 I have completed my build table and the steel was delivered today! Major parts to be sourced within the next few months from nearby wrecking yards and other parts from KineticVehicles.

My Dream many years ago now, was to build and sell these cars after I retired. However, in 2016 I was in a significant motorcycle accident and the dream seemed dead forever. I had picked up my 4th miata (2016 ND) in mid 2020 but it wasn't getting enough drive time and I didn't really feel like laying out the money to get it really track ready. So about a month ago now I put the ND up for sale, started collecting tools and source material, and am going to take a crack at making this nearly lost dream come true!

Great thread!

How will the NB differential hold up behind the Duratec 2.5l?

Will be fine. The 5-speed with go before the diff. As people mention about the notch being source of failure, that is cars on track or in a collision. People put significant power through stock diffs. And the 2.5 will top out aroind 260hp after full mods down the road. Starting closer to 200-210.

I will probably have plates welded onto my diff carrier, but not that concerned

Great to know! One of the concerns from GBS about using a Duratec 2.0 in place of the NB 1.8l on their USA SVD kit was NB rear diff capability. They thought the limit was around 200hp. My goal was slightly more moderate, maybe 180hp, so this gives me confidence in putting a slightly built Duratec 2.0 with NC trans ahead of an NB diff.

That os totally.unfounded. tons of people run 250+ hp on stock diffs. The 5-speed can shred itself at that level, but having been a miata person for pver 20 years, I don't think it is a big deal at all. Under specific conditions the case can fail at that notch, but it is under specific conditions of heavy load, usually under competition or impact

I’ll second Doom’s thoughts. 200hp isn’t going to break the diffs internals. What breaks things is torque plus traction (or shock loads). Plenty of Miata’s are making more than 250 ft/lbs of torque and the diffs holds up long term. I wouldn’t be concerned until far past the 300ft/lb mark. Transmissions are the first to go at elevated torque numbers (typically reliable until you exceed 250 ft/lbs). The weak point is the notches in the mount and that can easily be mitigated.

Sorry if you covered this before. Are you using a NC 5 speed trans or a NA/NB? If using the older model 5 speed, how did you adapt it to the Duratec?

Thanks!

NC 5-speed and nc driveshaft. The adaption to the NB diff will happen with the driveshaft when I have it shortened
