Nice tubing bender! You had to bolt it to the ground too, right?

And nice plug for the compound miter saw, i guess you're a fan too, huh?

Keep up the good work, it's looking great!

Lol... that's what's happening when I'm doodling with the welder

Yep, bender is bolted to the driveway, I don't have any other place that I can have 11' of tubing moving without hitting anything.

The CMS is one of the latest additions to my tool department, it makes life so much easier already.

But the sweetest tool I got lately has to be the notcher.
It's the JD2 notch master.
That thing is so easy to use and does such a nice job, I'm in love with it.

More cage pieces were fabricated today.
These are the two lower side bars, tomorrow I'm going to do the two upper ones which are going to go all the way to the fire wall.

I'm still debating about some of the bracing of the cage -

* One diagonal in the main hoop vs. X in the main hoop like the Caterham cage.
* Bends in the braces that connect the front and main hoop at the top vs. straight braces.

I'll probably figure it out in the next couple of days...

More cage bracing! (how surprising...)

Decided on a single diagonal, the cage is overbuilt anyway, no need to add any more extra weight.

As opposed to my original plan to cross the "door" bars I went with the NASCAR style bars.
They just seem to work better with the configuration of the frame.

I sat my towering 5'9" in the frame today to check the height of the main hoop and whether I should bend the brace that connect between the hoops on top.
TONS of clearance.
My 6'2" neighbour still has about 3-4" between his head with a helmet and where the braces will go, so I think that they don't need any bends in them. Good.

Haven't decided if I should put another brace between the two NASCAR bars, for now I have 2.
Does anyone have an opinion about it?

More to come soon.

Moti

Sorry for the many small updates, it helps me keeping track of how many days I'm working on the car :) .

Wow, you really mean business with that cage. :)
Good work man, very impressive.

There's no fooling around here!
No, sir!

I'm just thinking of other cars I'm going to share the track with, a lot of them have bumpers at shoulder height and weigh more than double.

"Note to self - build a serious cage."
"Check!"

absolutely.

why not triangulate them? especially since you're building a "serious" cage 8) it looks so great so far, I can't wait to see more.

see ideas below. the blue/purple or orange/red depend on what you're doing to tie the top side bar into the front hoop.

Thanks for the input.
I thought about it but I don't know if I can justify the extra weight from all the added length of tubing.
The two pieces that I have there right now are about a foot long - combined.

i figured as much. i guess it just doesn't seem like much more weight than the two perpendicular pieces, especially in light of the rigidity you will gain from them versus the perps.

anyway, just throwing out my $.02 I love your build! :D

Moti,

I like it but I think you should go with three traditional vertical braces in the nascar bars.

As I understand it the vertical braces are there to prevent the two door bars from splaying apart. In that case, three short vertical sections would be lighter than the suggested diagonals and I would think do a better job at keeping the bars from splaying. Also because the nascar bars are so raked in this design, they already triangulate the frame.

Very nice fit-up!

Peter

Thanks Peter.

I was thinking along the same route and debated having 2 or 3 because of the same reason.
I'll take your advice on this one and add a third one.

Not much happened since the last update, my baby's due date is less than 4 weeks away and the wife wants a bunch of things done around the house before we have the baby.
But, I do have the upcoming weekend that secured for the purpose of car building rather than home remodeling 8) .

Updates to follow.
