Thank you all for sharing the enthusiasm!

Miatas had 6 speed trans in the NB generation, between 1999 and 2005, only in select models - Sport package, LS package, special editions and the 04-05 Mazdaspeed.
It's a completely different beast than the regular 5 speed other than the bellhousing bolt pattern and the locations of the shifter, PPF attachment points and driveshaft.
It is a direct swap for miatas but may require a different tunnel treatment in a Locost.

Since I have them both in my garage currently, I intend to take some pics of both 5 and 6 speed trannies side by side with measurements to benefit my fellow locosters in the future.

The current production NC (third gen miata) has a 6 speed too, but it's a totally different animal.

The fancy shocks are from two different sources actually, the ones that will reside at the front of my locost are the rear shocks of an IRL Dallara, while the rear shocks of my car came off a Mazda World Challenge touring car.

Swapped out the 5 speed in my 99 Miata for the 6 speed. 6 speed gave lower gear ratios the equivalent of changing the rear end from a 4.10 to a 4.30. That was fine

But there was an issue, the shift pattern is so close together that it's easy to miss gears. I'm used to 6 speeds, I have one in my S2000 and have had them in other cars, this has never been an issue for me except on the Miata. It's also a common issue on the Miata forum. Many of the racers go backwards to the 5 speed for peace of mind.

I believe that the internals of both NB and NC 6-speeds are the same or have the same architecture with different ratios. Even the intermediate case is the same. Just the bellhousing and tailhousing portions of the case changed.

After reading your post I was a bit confused, it took me a couple days to figure out why.
I believe you're right, the early production NC shares the NB mid case with different bellhousing and tail housing.
However, later production NC has an all new trans (which is why I got confused, there's one of them on my rack in the shop), there's no seperate mid case, the bellhousing and the mid case are one unit and the tail housing is bolted to it.
IIRC, you can tell which trans is which by the location of reverse gear on the shifter - older transmissions have the reverse on the far right and down, newer transmissions have it up on the left side.

SR7, the IRL shocks were an eBay score.

And now that I finally have my shocks I can finish the suspension, so today I tackled the rear suspension and it's officially done, HA!

I got the shock brackets all done in the rear and will most likely finish the front ones within the next week or two.

I also mounted the lower coolant pipe that I fabricated a couple of days ago, made a template for radiator ducting and a bunch of other stuff. I'll post pics as stuff gets mounted on the car.

Where'd you find those wheel's again? Interesting that you went with the shock's mounted vertically it's nice to have them that way.

The wheels are from exospeed.com; the Exospeed VPD:

Yep, I bought them when Exospeed was still called Lenso, so mine are Lenso VPD
But yeah, they are pretty light at ~8 lbs a pop for a 13x7.5 wheel and at least at the time I bought them they were pretty light on my pocket at under $600 for the set.

The shocks have a slight angle to them when the car is at ride height and perfectly vertical at full bump.
